Perennials come back year after year, which makes them, well, predictable. And while we love predictable, sometimes you just want to shake things up. That’s where annuals come in. Annuals grow, bloom, and fade in a single season, so you can change your planting plan every year to keep things feeling fresh. Some annuals drop seeds, so baby plants often pop up next year (yay!). Read the plant tags to learn which annuals will tolerate a little sun (also known as part shade, which is about 3 to 4 hours per day) or full shade, meaning no direct sunlight. These easy-to-grow annuals for shade are sure to brighten your garden’s darker spots.

MYTH BUSTERS: Do insects die off in cold weather?

Insects are adaptive! 🐜 🐛 🕷 Some migrate, some burrow and hunker down for the winter, some lay eggs in the fall that will hatch in the spring- and some (very few) will die! Some are good garden insects - such as 🐞 ladybugs, dragon flies and earth worms!

Take advantage of winter weather before it gets too warm! HOW??

1. Clear the debris! Leaf piles and soggy, clumped together debris are a perfect breeding ground for nesting pests!

2. Clean gutters! The moisture and presence of leafy debris provide a shelter for insects that aren’t usually seen!

3. Prune plants! A large bush near your home or a collection of vegetation is going to provide shelter to creepy crawlers! Be wary of fruit trees too- falling fruit that remains on the ground can attract insects in a very short time!

4. Mulch carefully! Mulch protects a plants roots from cold weather and helps weeds from growing- but piled up too high or haphazardly- it also makes a great home for insects! Make sure to use an adequate amount and spread it evenly!

Winter and spring are a great time to get ahead of the PEST-GAME!! Start now!!
