A nice write up from our friends at Restore Mobile
Restore Mobile is doing important work to safeguard our community's historic structures, and they can always use your help. Get in touch, volunteer, and donate.
After the NAACP was outlawed by the state of Alabama in 1956, John Leflore, Mobile civil rights leader and elected official, and the Non-Partisan Voter's League took a more active role in civil rights in the Gulf City. Their work was instrumental in the desegregation of Mobile County public schools, the postal service, and police force. The case Mobile v Bolden, led by the NPVL, changed Mobile’s three-member City commission form of government, which disproportionately represented white voters, to today's mayor-council government. The office of the NPVL was located on the second floor of this building at the corner of St. Francis and Warren. The mixed-use building was built in stages between 1860 and the turn of the 20th century, housing retail space on the ground floor, and residential and office space above as is historically typical. The building has served as a location for Creole and African American businesses, and was the headquarters for an African American newspaper for many years. It has been recently renovated with historical details as the Temple Lodge lofts with ground floor retail space. The building is featured on the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail of Mobile which offers tours throughout Mobile.
