🏆 I won a NASA Award in the sixth grade.

Impressive, right?

Well...there’s a slight problem with that story.

My mother basically did the whole project. 😂

She was the brains, engineer, muscle and project manager. Apparently, I was upper management.

I’ve always liked winning. Blue ribbons, skating contests, awards, recognition...there’s something pretty satisfying about somebody saying, “You did good.”

But the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized there can be a pretty big difference between an award and a reward.

And sometimes chasing one can cause us to completely miss the other.

This week’s Sass & Sense started with my somewhat fraudulent NASA victory 😂 and ended up making me think about success, recognition, the gifts God gives us, and the scoreboard we use to decide whether our lives actually matter.

Maybe we’ve been keeping score of the wrong things.

Have you noticed how hard it’s become to figure out what’s actually TRUE? 🤔

Watch one news channel and hear one version. Change the channel and hear another. Open Facebook and somebody has a video that “proves” it. Someone else says it’s completely out of context.

And now we have AI. Lord help us. 😂

We have more information at our fingertips than any generation before us, yet sometimes it feels harder than ever to know what to believe.

But while writing this week’s Sass & Sense, I kept coming back to an uncomfortable realization...

The problem isn’t only THEM.

It’s us too.

Because sometimes we aren’t really searching for truth. We’re searching for something that confirms what we already believe.

And there’s a BIG difference between being right and doing right.

Have you ever been completely convinced you were headed in the right direction...only to find yourself STUCK? 😂

Living on Dauphin Island, we have a front-row seat to this happening almost every day.

There’s a sneaky little sandbar near our house that has claimed more unsuspecting boaters than I could ever count. We wave. We yell. We point toward deeper water.

Some listen.

Some don’t.

And some just give it more gas. 😳😂

After watching this happen over and over, I started thinking...

Aren’t we all doing the same thing sometimes?

We have a destination. We have a plan. The water ahead looks perfectly fine. And occasionally, there are even people standing on the shoreline trying to warn us.

But full speed ahead we go.
