9th grade French 2 students officially launched their National French Week Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience inspired by the imaginative worlds of Jules Verne.
“In what ways do Jules Verne’s works reflect humanity’s imagination and its pursuit of discovery and innovation?” This is the question students will be investigating.
They kicked off the adventure with outdoor challenges inspired by Verne’s four legendary works:
🔹 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea — The Nautilus Rescue Challenge
🔹 From the Earth to the Moon — Rocket Launch Relay
🔹 Around the World in 80 Days — Crab Walk Obstacle Course in 80 Seconds or Less
🔹 Journey to the Center of the Earth — The Lava Escape
Students will explore Verne’s visionary ideas in French, then bring them to life through museum-style dioramas and audio recordings in French—to be displayed in Barton’s lobby during National French Week for all to see.
SNEAK PEAK! National French Week is coming to Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies, November 13-19!! Adventures with Jules Verne

We surveyed our students with a Google form and grouped them with classmates who had similar interests. The groups were made up of French, German and Spanish students in an effort to increase collaboration across Barton’s world languages. Similarly, most students were placed in groups who met with a teacher other than their current world language teacher. This offered both a change in scenery and the perspective and guidance of a different instructor.

Take a look at LAUNCH DAY!! The Mobile International Festival served as the LAUNCH to our World Language and Career Prep PBL. Students went on a scavenger hunt using I-pads to collect their research. When we got back to school, students used their festival passports along with a guided Power Point to research which countries have business connections to our port city - MOBILE.
