A few years ago, a client came to me with a serious problem. He purchased a home in Missoula and was living in California caring for his wife with cancer, unable to check in on their new home. The dishwasher had a leak and mold slowly overtook the entire 3 levels of the 4000 square foot home. Because the damage wasn’t reported right away, the insurance would not cover it. They had to take the whole house to the studs. It was like nothing I had ever seen.

His wife passed and he shared with me that he’s always loved color (he had an orange corvette), specifically purple. He said he had always wanted a purple house, but there was no way his wife would have ever gone for it.

I encouraged him to do what makes him happy. This notion did and I obliged. I think, at first, he was sure I’d try to talk him out of it. There was no way I was going to. I did everything I could to make his dream a reality. And he was truly happy with his home.

And this was one of the most unique projects I’ve ever completed.

I spend a lot of professional time space planning. I do A LOT of kitchen design and work in the functional, albeit beautiful, world. The thought I put into this is all about seeing the space and empathetically imaging its’ impact on my clients’ happiness and well-being.

I force things into places and formations, to see how they don’t work. Like I have to prove what doesn’t work first.

And prove to myself why I was hired…if it was simple, I wouldn’t be on board. I start to stare at the screen knowing there’s an answer in there somewhere.

Then, I have close the laptop, wander around. Maybe deadhead some mums that are likely going to die in a week.

Open up the laptop and see that opening. I see it.👀

Then I close the laptop knowing tomorrow is going to be awesome, and I let it seep in and figure itself out in my head.

Thinking it through, Like I do.
