Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and Montana State Auditor / Commissioner James Brown - Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance- is shining a spotlight on a crisis that is too often ignored.
According to the FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report, seniors 60+ lost $7.75 billion to internet crime in 2025 alone, including $31.77 million right here in Montana.
We take our responsibility to seniors seriously, not just as a policy, but as a practice. On June 1st, we were proud to host DOJ Assistant Attorney General Angie Rolando in Missoula for a community education event focused on fraud awareness and elder financial protection. Having leadership at that level invest time in our community speaks volumes about the urgency of this issue.
Here is what Hellman Insurance Agency does year-round to protect our clients:
~ Annual recertification in Fraud, Waste, and Abuse compliance.
~ Annual additional training on protecting seniors each year.
~ We also report situations that raise red flags when we feel they need to be investigated to protect our clients.
Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
My team is dedicated to catching criminals involved in elder abuse and fraud. When we track them down, they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for preying on vulnerable members of our communities.

You wouldn’t fly without a passport, so why travel without medical coverage?
The U.S. Embassy recently reminded Americans that most domestic health plans, including Medicare, offer little to no protection once you leave the country, and emergency care or medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. By adding travel medical insurance to your plans, you can protect both your health and your wallet on that next cruise or overseas adventure.
We are sharing this article because we want our clients to be prepared, not surprised. If you have travel plans coming up, reach out to us, and we can review your current coverage and discuss travel medical options that help protect both your health and your wallet.

It's Medicare Fraud Prevention Week! If someone you don't know calls, emails, or texts you offering free medical equipment or services. What should you do?
Hang up.
Delete it.
Only you and your doctor should decide what care and services are right for you.
Scammers want your Medicare information so they can bill Medicare for services you don't need — like hospice (end-of-life care), home health care, or durable medical equipment (like a brace or cane).
Hospice scams are particularly harmful. If a scammer signs you up for hospice care without your knowledge, you could lose access to your regular Medicare benefits.
Remember: Never give out your Medicare Number and don't sign anything for free services — it's a scam. If you think you may have experienced fraud, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or report it online at Medicare.gov/fraud.
Talk to patients about common health care-related scams like back and knee braces, genetic testing, urinary catheters, and plastic Medicare cards. As a trusted source, you can help them learn about scams and how to protect their medical identity.
