It works for almost everyone.
But that ‘almost’ matters a great deal.
‘Almost’ is a child sobbing in his mama’s arms because yet another classroom movie is not audio described.
That should be enough to prove that ‘almost’ isn’t good enough.

About two weeks ago, I was troubled by the frequent emails I was getting from younger’s school saying that he had been sent to SSR and might need to serve detention AND I was processing that younger might not have support services this summer because his PCA had a change of circumstance.
Two weeks later, I’m so excited that a spot opened up for younger at a specialized charter school nearby that seems like it should be a much better match AND super jazzed up because our beloved neighbor is going to be younger’s PCA this summer.

The difference between ‘to/for/about and ‘with’ is the difference between subjugation and self-determination. It is a common occurrence for disabled people to have authority figures make decisions to/for/about them without obtaining or considering their input. It is presumed that they aren’t competent to make their own decisions or are misguided about their own abilities and limitations.
Making a decision for, and doing something to, a disabled person without the participation of the person (or someone trusted to advocate for them if needed) is ableist. It doesn’t matter what credentials or authority you have behind your name - if you aren’t doing it ‘with,’ you’re out of line.
(Excluding emergency, life-threatening situations, of course.)
