Often we want to carry the worries or the successes of today into tomorrow. As we put our heads on our pillows, we need to let go of today. Each new day needs to begin with a fresh mind. Each new day deserves our full attention. The purpose of the Tenth Step is to allow us to concentrate our energies on the present. Worries, past and future, scatter our energies. Step Ten helps us keep our energies focused and available for today. Why is this important? It is only in the present that we can truly connect with others and our Higher Power. The present is our gateway to the eternal. Worries and even successes make us less able to step across this gateway into a better relationship with our Higher Power and others. We need to allow ourselves to travel light into tomorrow.

We could feel our self-decay as freedom after freedom was lost to our illness of addiction. Our attitude became more negative as our illness grew. Our negative attitude was a symptom of our decay. Recovery is as much about attitude as it is about not using chemicals and not acting out. We work to create an attitude of gratitude. We work to replace negative attitudes with actions of hope, service, humility, and love. We know that a positive attitude is an achievement, not a gift. We didnβt choose our illness, but we get to choose the attitude we take in dealing with it. So we can go ahead and cop an attitudeβas long as itβs an attitude of gratitude!

Discipline is not a bad word, though many of us react negatively when we hear it. Discipline is a means to an end. It allows us to channel our energies toward goals. Those goals include living a better life and being of service to others. Being disciplined has many forms. These forms include turning our will and lives over to a Higher Power, calling a friend in need, writing out a moral inventory, or setting a date to do a Fifth Step. When we make amends for wrongs done, this is a form of discipline. Discipline always involves action. Often the action is restraint and redirection. Discipline is a beautiful concept that, when put into action, produces beautiful results. It helps bring order to the chaos of our lives.
