Rescuing Ourselves

No one likes a martyr.

How do we feel around martyrs? Guilty, angry, trapped, negative, and anxious to get away.

Somehow, many of us have developed the belief that depriving ourselves, not taking care of ourselves, being a victim, and suffering needlessly will get us what we want.

It is our job to notice our abilities, our strengths, and take care of ourselves by developing and acting on them.

It is our job to notice our pain and weariness and appropriately take care of ourselves.

It is our job to notice our deprivation, too, and begin to take steps to give ourselves abundance. It begins inside of us, by changing what we believe we deserve, by giving up our deprivation and treating ourselves the way we deserve to be treated.

Life is hard, but we donโ€™t have to make it more difficult by neglecting ourselves. There is no glory in suffering, only suffering. Our pain will not stop when a rescuer comes, but when we take responsibility for ourselves and stop our own pain.
The language of letting go ~
Melanie Beatty
Today, I will be my own rescuer. I will stop waiting for someone else to work through my issues and solve my problems for me.

In past years, when we thought of our future, most of us could never have imagined our life as it is now. With our mind clouded by our addictions, our dreams were either too small or too grandiose and unrealistic. Though we are now mostly free from obsessive thinking, we may still dream too small and think of a future limited by our specific requirements: โ€œI must have this promotion.โ€ โ€œMy life is meaningful only if this relationship succeeds.โ€ We can learn to open ourselves to and savor the mystery of how our life is unfolding. Godโ€™s plan that brought us safely here includes the possibility of an even more fulfilling life. We donโ€™t need to know what weโ€™ll be doing five years or even three days from now. Weโ€™re in Godโ€™s loving care now, as in the past, and we can trust weโ€™ll be just where we need to be in the future.

Itโ€™s a little disconcerting to discover that the faults we deplore in others are exactly the ones weโ€™re dealing with, too. A person who berates a partner, friend, or co-worker for being too critical is demonstrating the same flaw. Why canโ€™t we see our own character flaws, so apparent to others? Maybe itโ€™s because weโ€™re dealing with a spiritual principle. Our brothers and sisters are our mirrors. God made us essentially alike. Each of us is as deserving of criticism as anyone, and as worthy of love. When we condemn someone, we condemn ourselves. By loving others, we are loved....hpytrlztday
