This beautiful home was in dire need of a full front-porch restoration after tree damage took a toll on several historic columns. The main focus? One pillar base that had cracked, weakened, and weathered over decades of exposure.
Our team carefully supported the structure, removed the damaged components, and rebuilt the base using matching materials and period-appropriate profiles. The result is a clean, solid repair that restores both strength and historic integrity—blending seamlessly with the rest of the porch.
Preserving original character, reinforcing what matters, and bringing historic homes back to life—that’s the New Leaf way. 🌿

This shower is all about blending beauty with purpose. We added a striking blue tile accent wall to give the space personality, while keeping the surrounding wall and floor tile true to the era of the home. Finished with clean chrome hardware, the look feels timeless and fresh all at once.
Just as important as style was accessibility. This shower was thoughtfully built to make getting in and out easier as the homeowners age — with a functional shampoo niche for everyday convenience and a grab bar being added for extra safety and stability.
Because great design isn’t just about how a space looks — it’s about how it supports you for years to come. 🏡💙

Early 19th-century decks were constructed using tongue-and-groove Douglas fir decking. In many areas, building permits were not required at the time, so footing and framing methods vary widely from deck to deck. In some cases, these original structures do not meet current building code requirements.
On this St. Paul project, after demolition of the decking we discovered some “creative” and insufficient framing and no footings. We needed to brace up the roof and rebuild the deck framing before any finishing work could even begin. Now it’s on its way to being secure, beautiful, and built to last with proper framing support, Maintenance Free composite decking and lattice with similar appearance to the original painted wood.
To support the deck we needed to install new posts inside of the decorative posts. This maintained the historic look but added structural integrity.
If your deck feels bouncy, uneven, cracked, or “just not right,” don’t ignore it. Structural deck issues can lead to costly and dangerous problems down the road — and they’re usually fixable if caught early.

We’re seeing a lot of homeowners told their porch posts or columns need full replacement when repair is absolutely possible. In many Minneapolis and St. Paul homes, especially older and historic ones, the damage is often limited to the base or a specific section caused by moisture, settling, or drainage issues.
At New Leaf Restorations, we specialize in pillar repair, not unnecessary replacement. We stabilize the structure, rebuild only what’s compromised, and carefully match original trim and details so your porch keeps its character — and your budget stays intact.
If your pillars are leaning, soft at the base, cracking, or separating at the top, those are early warning signs worth addressing now. Repairing them early can prevent larger structural issues down the road.

This week we move into a new year and this leaves us reflecting on some of our favorite projects from the past one — the transformations, the details, the before-and-afters, and the homes that trusted us with their stories.
From rot repair and restorations to remodels that reimagined how spaces are used, this year was full of meaningful work we’re proud of. We can’t wait to build on that momentum and take on what’s next.
Here’s to a new year of craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and homes that feel even better than before. Cheers to what’s ahead! 🥂🏡

Ice dams aren’t a roof problem — they’re a home science problem.
If snow melts unevenly on your roof and refreezes at the eaves, water can back up under shingles and quietly enter your home. By the time you see ceiling stains, peeling paint, or soggy insulation, damage is already happening behind the scenes.
At New Leaf Restorations, we don’t just remove ice dams — we diagnose why they’re forming. Using a focused consultation approach, we look at attic heat loss, ventilation, insulation gaps, air leaks around fixtures, and moisture movement throughout the home. Ice dams are a symptom. We find the cause.
We’re seeing this across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and many surrounding suburbs — from historic homes in Kenwood and Summit Avenue to 80s and 90s builds with vaulted ceilings and complex rooflines. If ice dams show up every winter, there’s a reason.

Sometimes improving a home means rethinking how you move through it. For this project, we removed the existing stair system and began installing a brand-new set of stairs designed for better flow, comfort, and headroom.
By carefully cutting into the pantry above, resetting doors, and relocating lighting and switches, we’re creating a safer, more functional stairway that feels intentional and well-integrated. The finished look will feature oak treads with paint-ready risers and skirts, giving the space a clean, timeless finish.
Big changes often start with thoughtful planning — and this one is well on its way. Stay tuned for the finished reveal!
