BIRL Member Spotlight: Dr. Daniel Rafter, MD
Dr. Daniel Rafter grew up in Chicago and double majored in Chemistry and Entrepreneurship at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated at Ross University (which is the top Caribbean Medical School). After graduating, he took a year off before residency to do Neurosurgery Research at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis under the direction of Dr. Uzma Samadani, M.D., Ph.D as the Clinical Coordinator for the TRACK-TBI study.
His ultimate goal is to end up in trauma surgery and critical care medicine. 🚑 👨‍⚕️

Meet Tabitha! Tabitha is currently a pre-med student majoring in Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota. She currently works at the Brain Injury Research Lab and U of M Genomics Center. Uzma Samadani, MD, PhD was born in Wimbledon, England and moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin at the age of two. After high school, she matriculated into the University Wisconsin-Madison’s Medical Scholars Program where she had her first exposure to research and graduated with majors in Molecular Biology and English Literature.
Dr. Samadani joined the MD/PhD program at the University of Illinois and, upon completion of medical school, undertook an internship and neurosurgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvana. Dr. Samadani then worked as an attending neurosurgeon at NYHHCS from September 2007 to July 2015, becoming Chief of Neurosurgery in 2010.
In 2015, Dr. Samadani joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota when she started the Brain Injury Research Lab.

The Brain Injury Research Lab was started by Dr. Samadani in August of 2015 and is a joint venture between HCMC Neurosurgery and the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation (MMRF).
Our mission is to further our understanding of brain injury to better prevent, classify, and treat traumatic brain injury as well as to improve brain health in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul community by creating innovative, sustainable solutions that can be applied to larger scale communities throughout the world.
