Honored to host 2 whimsical characters at ColorWheel Gallery that were previously displayed in 'Avalon on Grand' Gift Shop in St. Paul for years 🥰 Karen Hanson (Campus Cards & Avalon on Grand) was an inspiration to me before I even met her. As a teen I thought it was so cool to spend time in
Dinkytown on the UofM campus. There in Karen's shop I saw that she was not afraid to share her Activism for Social & Environmental Justice in the items she carried (the first time I saw greeting cards featuring Black & Brown People was in her shop & you know I bought one of everyone I saw) that was not common in the 80s, 90s & still today. (they tell you it's bad for business to put your morals out there, keep it neutral 🙄) Well.. she ran & curated those shops for decades & customers came from all over to shop, visit with Karen & hear her interesting stories. ☮️ Karen was a long time activist. She was active in the Peace Movement, arrested for protesting over a dozen times & as an OG member of Women Against Military Madness (Wamm) was invited to speak at a Women's Peace Conference in Finland. She also traveled to Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, China & Tibet as well.
I got to know Karen later thru Anti-War protests & when I started selling my art at Avalon. Then later when she was no longer able to travel like she used to she would visit me at ColorWheel, catch up & find treasures for her shop. We were both Treasure Hunters & Frida Kahlo fans. Karen passed away last year & until the end, she wore her feminist, activist, anti-war t-shirts & her room in the memory care center was adorned with Avalon Treasures, Love, Activism & Frida Kahlo by her Daughter Mia Lisa Olson 💜 Thank You Mia for trusting me with these 2 ladies who I'm sure have a whole lot of stories to tell & bring a little part of your Mom with them. ☮️
