TECH TIP TUESDAY:

Let’s revisit one of our favorite projects in recent years, the Hanging Skeleton Mech!

This is a fun and relatively simple project that can be endlessly customized to fit your specific theme or aesthetic. This time of year store shelves are filled with plastic skeletons of all different types, so it’s an awesome time to find one you like and create your own custom animated prop!

TECH TIP TUESDAY:

Figured this video might have some useful info for those of us who deal with props from Spirit or Home Depot in our haunts.

The arms on my son's favorite prop (Bad Seed by Seasonal Visions) had stopped working. After trying a couple quick fixes I ended up using a PicoRelay controller to trigger the prop and a new additional power supply for the motor that moves the arms. This video shows that process.

I figured this might be useful to illustrate how a PicoRelay can be used to activate these types of props sold by the Big Box stores and other components as well. This same idea could be used to add fog to a prop, a light that turns on when the prop activates, or any number of other effects that you can time out to match the prop's activation.

Thank you to our buddy Philip H Anselmo for the killer shoutout at his recent show with his awesome band Down while they were in town playing with Slayer recently. He also got a chance to stop out at the shop for a quick tour. Phil’s a true haunter and it was a blast talking all things horror and Halloween with him!

Pretty cool custom project of a sliding motion platform! Customer will be using this as an elevator simulator. It will slowly slide over during the show so when the door opens again they will be exiting through a different hallway. This was a fun one to figure out!

Inspired by our buddy Dennis over at Dead On Deisgns, this mech allows you to create an awesome animatronic featuring a skeleton or other creepy creature carving a pumpkin (or really anything else you can imagine).

TECH TIP TUESDAY:

Video effects are one of the quickest ways to up the perceived production value of your haunt, but they can be intimidating to get into if you’ve never worked with them before.

This week’s video is a step-by-step guide for creating a triggerable haunted moving portrait using a Sprite Video player and one of our Wireless Triggers!

We’re using videos from AtmosFX, but you can use videos from any other source for this. And you can change the trigger as well. You could use a motion sensor, a step mat, or even another controller to activate this effect.

I’m always excited when our friend Paul over at Halloween DIY and How-To posts a new video! His props are amazing and his videos are some of the most detailed and thorough prop building videos you can find!

I liked this video especially because it uses a Deer Motor. We tend to use a lot of our 12v Prop Motors in builds here, but the Deer Motor should not be overlooked. They are small and powerful for their size, run at a great speed for slower-moving creepy Halloween builds, and they plug directly into standard household power, so no need for additional speed controllers.

Just in time for your Halloween-themed dance parties. Our resident Mech Board Master, Mark, made this shockingly danceable banger entirely from sounds sampled at our shop! I'm kind of in awe at how much it legitimately slaps!
