MSR Design
Architecture and Interiors MSR Design creates transformative and human-centric, award-winning architecture and interior design.
Since 1981, our firm has produced work of enduring value: buildings that are expressly right for their time and place and that culturally and physically age gracefully. We tailor our design solutions to each client, resulting in a diverse mix of sustainable, equitable, healthy, beautiful projects. We actively engage our clients to understand needs and uncover aspirations, while considering each project’s social, cultural, economic, and environmental goals.
Last week, Simona Fischer, Veronica Karr, and Joon Ta took the stage at the AIA Minnesota A’24 MN Conference on Architecture to give a presentation entitled “Ethics of Forced Labor in the Building Material Supply Chain: Developing a Mitigation Framework.” Their session shed light on the critical issue of forced labor in building material supply chains, introducing a mitigation framework and practical resources to empower design professionals to identify and address these risks in their specifications.
American Library Association's Core Forum will take place November 14-16, 2024, in Minneapolis, Minnesota! Design leaders from MSR Design will be sharing the latest in library design in four different presentations. We invite you to join the conversation.

Architects are key players in the , not least because they’ve been leading the charge in tracking embodied carbon throughout the built environment. With accurate data in hand, they can:
Create buildings that are adaptable to changing uses over time. 🏢🔄🔧
Repurpose existing structures and assets instead of building new. ♻️🏚️🏗️
Understand the full environmental impact of materials from extraction to disposal. 🌱🔍📉
Collaborate with designers, engineers, builders, and sustainability consultants throughout the project lifecycle. 🤝👷♂️🌍
Plan for the eventual deconstruction of buildings, viewing them as material banks. 🔨♻️🚧

Great to see Mill 19 featured in this U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) article “LEED Core and Shell Projects Bring Sustainable Character to Their Communities.”
Writer Heather Benjamin states, “The beauty of the structure’s positive and negative space adds to its success. The original steel beams, resplendent in their patina of time, soar above the new manufacturing spaces. A full-height, full-length corridor of open space, what [MSR Design architect Chris] Wingate calls ‘the experiential heart’ of the site, connects the new buildings and the historic frame.”

🌍✨ MSR Design's report entitled "Embodied Carbon in Commercial Furniture” is featured in a Metropolis Magazine article that highlights how the furniture industry is stepping up on circularity. With 8.5 million tons of office assets ending up in U.S. landfills annually, we're advocating for salvaging, reusing, and refurbishing furniture to reduce embodied carbon. Principal & Architect Paul Mellblom was a featured speaker at the Bisnow Twin Cities Construction & Development conference yesterday. Paul addressed the topic of how the last year fared for Twin Cities development, and what's coming next in 2025.
MSR Design's director of sustainability Simona Fischer contributed to the "Who's Who in the Circular Workplace" global guide just published by Green Standards.
She states, “Designers have incredible power to drive an uptick in the desirability of reclaimed materials. We need to show beautiful examples of projects made with reused things, so our clients can see what is possible.”

Given by the IFLA - International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and sponsored by De Gruyter Publishing, the award program recognizes libraries and library projects that best communicate their commitment to environmental sustainability. IFLA states, “The new building follows green principles and includes Indigenous art. Its design maximizes natural light, blending modern innovation with ancient wisdom.”

How the Furniture Industry is Stepping Up on Circularity. Responding to new studies that spotlight the environmental impact of furniture, manufacturers, dealers, and start-ups are accelerating transparency, reuse, and decarbonization. In a 2022 study conducted by MSR Design the firm highlights an EPA estimate that some 8.5 million tons of office assets end up in U.S. landfills annually. “As a result, it is critical to normalize salvaging, reusing, and refurbishing in the design process to reduce furniture embodied carbon,” the authors note.
