Smartphone apps with limited functionality have frustrated drivers, including Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press.

In a recent column, Phelan writes about J.D. Power insights showing Americans’ frustrations with smartphone apps, as well as his own experience trying to evaluate vehicle apps.

“When I scheduled a vehicle specifically to evaluate its app, it took an expert from the automaker more than half an hour working in my driveway to connect it to the company’s server,” he wrote.

“On top of that, I was told it might take days for its features to be available, because the app department works bankers’ hours.”

Features powered by advanced driver assistance systems, like lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking features, represent a sizable percentage of the total industry’s problems, insights from the inaugural J.D. Power 2022 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Quality and Satisfaction Study show.

This may affect consumer acceptance of more automated driving features.

“If manufacturers want to increase the level of autonomy in the future, today’s features cannot be problematic,” said Ashley Edgar, senior director of global automotive supplier benchmarking and alternative mobility at J.D. Power.

September is typically a high-volume auto sales month, as manufacturers try to clear out old model-year vehicles.

While holiday promotions were nearly nonexistent, modest improvements in vehicle production allowed manufacturers to tap pent-up consumer demand.

As a result, the retail sales pace shows a modest increase from a year ago.
