“Two-Spirit” is a term created in 1990 at an Indigenous gay and le***an conference in Winnipeg, Canada, derived from the Ojibwe phrase niizh manidoowag — meaning “two spirits.” It honors a longstanding cultural identity rooted in Indigenous traditions.
