Federal Judge Dismisses Assault Case Against Somali American Woman Arrested During ICE Operation

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A federal judge has dismissed with prejudice an assault case against 23-year-old Somali American woman Nasra Ahmed, preventing prosecutors from refiling the charges stemming from her arrest during a January immigration enforcement operation in St. Paul.

Ahmed, a U.S. citizen, was arrested by ICE agents outside her apartment on Jan. 14 during Operation Metro Surge. Speaking publicly after the incident, Ahmed alleged that agents demanded identification, used a racial slur, forcibly detained her, and held her for two days.

Federal prosecutors initially charged Ahmed with felony assault, alleging that she yelled obscenities at agents, threw an egg at one officer, and spit in another agent’s face. The charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor.

In April, Ahmed sought dismissal of the case, arguing that the government violated her due process rights by publicly releasing prejudicial information despite a court order sealing the complaint. She also filed motions seeking evidence from prosecutors.

Rather than provide the requested materials, the U.S. Attorney’s Office moved to dismiss the case without prejudice. Ahmed did not oppose dismissal but argued that the case should be permanently closed.

U.S. District Judge John Tunheim agreed, ruling that the case should be dismissed with prejudice to protect Ahmed from what he described as potential prosecutorial harassment.

In his order, Tunheim criticized the government’s failure to provide evidence and questioned its rationale for seeking dismissal. The judge wrote that prosecutors appeared to be using dismissal as a way to avoid their discovery obligations, calling the government’s actions “certainly troubling.”

The ruling brings an end to the case and bars federal prosecutors from pursuing the same charges against Ahmed in the future.

Second Annual Abdi Bile 5K Run/Walk Returns to Minnesota, Celebrating a Global Champion and Community Inspiration

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — The legacy of one of Africa’s greatest distance runners will once again bring together athletes, families, and community members from across Minnesota and beyond as the Second Annual Abdi Bile 5K Run/Walk takes place on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, which attracted hundreds of runners and walkers, this year’s gathering promises another inspiring celebration of athletic excellence, community wellness, and the enduring impact of Somali sports icon Abdi Bile.

Bile etched his name into athletics history in 1987 when he became Somalia’s first-ever World Athletics Championships gold medalist. Competing in Rome, he captured the men's 1,500-meter title with a winning time of 3:36.80, defeating a world-class field in one of the most memorable races in championship history. His astonishing final 800-meter split of 1:46.00 remains among the fastest closing halves ever recorded in a major championship race.

Nearly four decades later, Bile’s influence extends far beyond the track. Now based in Minnesota, he serves as a respected coach, mentor, and community leader, inspiring young athletes and encouraging healthy lifestyles through sport, education, and mentorship.

Organizers say the annual 5K Run/Walk is designed not only to honor Bile’s remarkable achievements but also to unite communities through fitness, cultural pride, and family-friendly recreation. Participants of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to take part, whether running competitively or enjoying the course at a walking pace.

“Abdi Bile’s story is one of perseverance, excellence, and inspiration,” organizers noted. “This event celebrates not only his historic accomplishments but also his continued commitment to empowering the next generation.”

The scenic course at Hyland Park Reserve will provide participants with an opportunity to enjoy one of the Twin Cities metro area's premier outdoor destinations while celebrating a figure whose achievements continue to resonate around the world.

Community leaders, local athletes, youth organizations, and supporters are expected to attend the event, which aims to strengthen community connections while promoting health and wellness. Organizers hope to build on last year’s strong turnout and establish the Abdi Bile 5K Run/Walk as a lasting annual tradition in Minnesota.

Registration is now open, and participants are encouraged to sign up early. Additional event information and registration details can be found at abdibilerun.org.

As runners and walkers gather this summer, the event will serve as a powerful reminder that the legacy of a world champion is measured not only by medals won, but also by the lives inspired along the way.
