Minneapolis Public Schools Closed Jan. 8–9 Following Deadly Shooting Involving ICE Agents
Minneapolis Public Schools announced that all schools will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 8, and Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, citing safety concerns following a deadly incident in the city earlier Wednesday in which women were shot and killed by ICE agents, according to authorities.
District officials said the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” as law enforcement continues to respond to the incident and its aftermath across Minneapolis. No additional details about specific threats to schools were provided.
Classes are expected to resume on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026.
Thank you, P.E.A.S.E. Academy!

Thank you, Minnesota Alliance of Recovery Community Organizations!
Approximately 80,000 Minnesotans have Somali roots. They are our board members, our staff, and our volunteers. They are our neighbors, our friends, our co-workers, and our families. We are one community. Dehumanizing one of us dehumanizes all of us.
The holidays can be a beautiful time — but they can also bring up stress, memories, loneliness, and triggers. If this season feels heavy, please know you’re not alone.
Reach out to a trusted friend, a sponsor, or someone who supports your recovery. And remember, you can always reach out to us at Niyyah Recovery, too. Your wellbeing matters.
Wishing you a safe, peaceful holiday. 💜

BIG NEWS in case you missed it!
We are proud to celebrate the launch of Minneapolis’ second Safe Station — expanding 24/7, no-cost access to recovery support in our community! 🎉💛
Located at Fire Station 7, this Safe Station will serve neighborhoods deeply impacted by overdose with immediate peer support, connections to services, harm-reduction resources, and a compassionate path toward recovery.
This milestone is possible through our strong partnership with the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Fire Department — and it builds on the powerful results of the Safe Station model already changing lives in our city.

Meeting people where they’re at — with compassion, patience, and understanding. That’s where real connection begins.

What a beautiful day. We got to share a piece of our culture and faith through Niyyah Recovery at MARRCH. We talked about how important it is for our Somali and Muslim clients in treatment to feel understood — to have halal food, to be seen, and to have people who truly get it.
The best part was when Regina and Denita tried on the hijab. That moment meant so much to us— it showed love, respect, and a willingness to learn.
And to top it off, we had amazing Somali dancers who brought so much energy and joy to the room! 💃🏽
Alhamdulilah for this experience, for community, and for everyone who continues to walk with with us on this journey. 💜
There are so many ways you can be part of the solution. Join us in building hope and healing in our communities.
