It’s the summertime and that usually means one thing… lots of fun in the sun! But, everyone knows that too much sun exposure without sunglasses or a hat is no bueno. Right? RIGHT! Sunglasses help minimize brightness and block UV rays in any season and place where the sun’s rays can impact your eyes or vision. Prolong UV exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions so, before you head outside, arm yourself with a pair of shades that offer 100% UV protection!

Did you know that camels have 3 eyelids and 2 sets of eyelashes? Two of the eyelids have eyelashes that help keep sand out of their eyes and the third eyelid acts much like a “windshield wiper” that moves side to side—essential for days with higher winds that stir up the sand and dust.

Most people can wear contact lenses safely and comfortably for 14-16 hours daily, but our eyes usually do a pretty good job of letting us know when it’s time to remove them. If your eyes start to feel irritated, dry, or itchy, it’s time to give your eyes a breather!

Cucumbers are incredible for your eyes and body! They are packed with Vitamin C (which stimulates new cell growth) and folic acid (which stimulates antioxidants to help skin fight off environmental toxins that make eyes look puffy and tired). Moreover, their cool temperature helps give skin that refreshed look and feel, and their high water content helps moisturize the skin beneath the eyes and prevent wrinkles, restoring the skin's natural elasticity.

Did you know there are more than one type of UV rays? They’re actually 3! UVA is the longest wavelength that penetrates deep into the skin. Cataracts are linked to over-exposure to these rays. UVB rays that reach the surface of the skin can cause tanning, burning, and signs of aging. The cornea absorbs most UVB rays. UVC rays are found in man-made sources like welding, torches, lasers, etc. Offer your eyes maximum protection by wearing sunglasses that have 100% UV protection.

Our eyes are exposed to the elements in the air around us. Tiny particles like dust and smoke can lodge themselves on the moist layer of tears that coat our eyes, called the tear film. When the tear film is compromised it's unable to properly lubricate our eyes, causing them to feel dry. So make sure to wear protective eyewear when out and about and make sure you drink plenty of water.

Who doesn’t love a good smoothie filled with delicious fruits or veggies?! It's not just tasty, but also great for our eye health! Bananas and carrots are filled with vitamin A, which helps promote healthy eyes. Oranges are high in vitamin C, which supports the health of blood vessels in the eye. Ginger is an anti-inflammatory that benefits the whole body. Add in some Greek yogurt and ice for a creamy, scrumptious, and healthy smoothie!

Millions around the world aged 60+ are currently living with cataracts. As we age, the lens of our eye can start to become cloudy – essentially, a cataract. As the lens grows more opaque, light can’t pass through as easily, causing blurry vision. Lower your risk of cataracts by eating healthy foods, not smoking, and wearing sunglasses. And make sure to schedule yearly eye exams to safeguard your eyesight!

We’d like to take a moment to remember and honor all the brave men and women who sacrifice their lives in the service of our country. 🇺🇸

Drinking enough water keeps our body hydrated and functioning at its best. Just like our body, our eyes rely on water to help keep them lubricated. Conversely, poor hydration can lead to dry, irritated, and gritty eyes. So drink up!

We humans only have 1 lens—could you imagine what it would be like to have 30,000 lenses?! Dragonflies can also see in all directions at the same time except for 1 blind spot directly behind them. Their eyes take up the majority of their head and are hypersensitive to light. Moreover, they can also see colors that we humans can’t even fathom!

Back in the day, we only had to worry about 1 screen—the TV screen. Nowadays, we are surrounded with screens! Staring at digital devices prevents us from blinking regularly, making us more prone to developing dry eye disease. Moreover, spending too much time staring at screens can lead to digital eye strain. By wearing anti-reflective lenses and blue light glasses you can relieve much of the discomfort. Another tip is to keep digital devices at arm's length, reduce overhead and device lighting, and take frequent breaks.

Water can cause soft contact lenses to change shape, swell, and stick to the eye. It can make wearing contacts uncomfortable and even scratch the cornea, making it easier for germs to enter the eye and potentially cause an infection.

Just as with eating healthy and exercising—taking care of your eyes should be a priority! To keep your eyes healthy, be sure to get a comprehensive eye exam on a regular basis. It's the most effective way to find out whether you need glasses or contacts or if your prescription has changed. It can also be life-changing, as it can detect the early stages of sight-robbing eye diseases. Celebrate Healthy Vision Month by booking an eye exam for yourself and your family today!
