This chant, written by Heidi Wilson, has its words on my lips and heart here in Aotearoa. And this sound bite from @resistancerevivalchorus is just one of many that have brought tears to my eyes lately. As I watch what’s unfolding not only in the USA but across the world, I feel devastated. But this song brings hope. And while hope can sometimes feel complicated, it’s something we need. It helps us hold on to the good, to what we’re all reaching for, together, as a global community. Chants like this come from a deep legacy of song as resistance shaped by spirituals, freedom songs, the civil rights movement, where grief and courage have been carried side by side. Across generations and movements, people have turned to singing to survive what once felt unsurvivable. I couldn’t help but sketch into these words. To all those singing in the streets, teaching one another, spreading songs of hope, thank you. Your embodied hope travels far and wide. Art, music, writing, crafting, poetry… these are how we stay human when the world feels anything but. They’re how we stay connected and how we keep trusting the dawn will come.
