Behind the scenes moments from the making of “Collapsing Sky” for Alfa Romeo by Director Damien Blue.

“Because of the vast nature of the work at CSS - we wanted to approach capture through scopes that served as our guidelines to the look of the piece - Small: macros and intricate details of pieces, Wide: for the spaces and how the art worked together, and Expansive: the metaphorical nature of an art studio, their artists, and their artwork. We kept that approach in mind with each set piece.” - Director

DOP Kyle Kadow approached the look of the docufilm with inspiration from classical films of the 70s and 60s where the camera was primarily operated on a dolly with simple pans and tilts. Because the team was capturing fine artwork, we wanted to keep those subjects and artwork the focus and not distract with a modern style or eclectic camera movements. Anamorphic was immediately the way to go to match that look with soft keys and hot side lights and our focus really became how to capture each moment within the perspective of the scopes.

PATHWAY TO PEACE - PTERODACTYL KING

A rollicking descent into the corruption of self, relishing greed, hedonistic materialism, and the consequences of getting too much power that is not our own - (especially when it’s aliens!).

DOP and 2nd Unit DOP teamed up to craft a classic look with rich saturated 90s colors and muted greys, lighting up subjects with bright keys and keeping colors nice and poppy. They developed several lighting styles that were used for the different “look phases” of the production, all captured at various times. They used anamorphic lenses to craft classic camera movements, while also mixing it up to keep it fun, allowing for the story to play out in the action packed set pieces. Creating that language allowed them to move seamlessly as two units to capture all the mayhem in chaotic harmony.

In “Collapsing Sky” a commercial for car brand Alfa Romeo, Director Damien Blue approached the production as the brand approaches their cars - treating it like a work of art. It’s why he carefully crafted the approach utilizing two crews with their respective DPs to capture separate styles that blend together to create a cohesive whole. One for the car, the other for the characters.

"We had a skeletal crew, but with the masterful and collaborative expertise of cinematographers Mack Fisher and Mason Pendergast, we captured some breathtaking visuals. Using a mix of dolly, handheld, and a flight head arm, we achieved shots that were awe-inspiring."
