When Neil Young’s son, Ben, was born with severe cerebral palsy—non-verbal and quadriplegic—the rock legend didn’t despair; he started engineering. In 1982, Young baffled critics by releasing Trans, an album filled with synthesized, computerized vocals. The world thought he had lost his musical direction, but in reality, Neil was turning his studio into a laboratory. He was experimenting with vocoders not to top the charts, but to find a digital frequency that his son could hear and relate to.

Neil’s ranch became a symphony of adaptive technology. He rigged model trains with head-controlled switches so Ben could play, proving that with the right tools, disability doesn't define ability. This philosophy led Neil and his wife, Pegi, to found The Bridge School, an institution dedicated to empowering children with severe speech and physical impairments, ensuring they had a place to belong.

Ben grew to become his father’s "North Star." Far from being passive, Ben has run his own successful organic egg business, Coastside Farms, for over twenty years, using customized technology to manage the operation.

Neil Young’s journey with Ben reveals a profound truth: love is an active verb. Faced with a silence that seemed unbreakable, Neil didn’t try to "fix" his son. Instead, he rebuilt the world around him, proving that communication is not just about words, but about the relentless refusal to give up on one another.

Cortez the Killer, by Neil Young and Crazy Horse
A killer track (ha!) from the 1975 album Zuma. This is a favorite from Young's repertoire, featuring one of his finest guitar solos. Introducing the song at a performance in 1996, Young said: “One night I stayed up too late when I was goin’ to high school … I ate like six hamburgers or somethin’. I felt terrible … very bad … this is before McDonald’s … I was studying history, and in the morning I woke up and I’d written this song."
Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, new member of Crazy Horse when the original version of Cortez the Killer was recorded for the album Zuma: “I had some angel dust. Conned Billy into smoking it with me. We recorded ‘Cortez,’ I’m sitting there nodding out. That was the take. I had the song all turned around—I thought the second chord was the first chord. It’s only three chords.”
