Electrolytes are essential minerals that carry an electrical charge in our electric body in our electric universe. Everything has an electrical polarity of positive and negative charge. Electrolytes prevail in our blood, urine, tissues, and other body fluids. The importance of electrolytes is that they are crucial to keeping your internal environment balanced and maintain homeostasis.
Here’s a closer look at the 7 major electrolytes:
Sodium (Na+)
Chloride (Cl-)
Potassium (K+)
Magnesium (Mg++)
Calcium (Ca++)
Phosphate (HPO4–)
Bicarbonate (HCO3-)
Electrolytes affect many important bodily functions. These include:
Balancing your body’s acid/base (pH) level
Moving nutrients into your cells
Moving wastes out of your cells
Making sure that your nerves, muscles, heart, and the brain all work the way they should
The most important electrolytes include: Bicarbonate, Calcium, Chloride, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorous, and Magnesium. We ingest these minerals from the foods we eat and the fluids we drink. Fruits and vegetables are a good source for electrolytes. Seasoning food with plenty of clean sea salt is vital and it is unfortunate that the medical establishments has convinced people to be on a low sodium diet. This is the biggest contributor to heat strokes in the elderly when not having enough air conditioning during heat waves in the summer.
The following common situations that can lead to an electrolyte imbalance include:
Not drinking enough water. or drinking too much water when not even thirsty can produce a loss of electrolytes too. The amount of water that you take in should equal the amount you lose.
Rapid fluid loss from diarrhea or vomiting.
Kidney disease. Your kidneys regulate the concentration of electrolytes.
Poor nutrition and lack of salt in diet, not taking supplemental vitamins and minerals.
But not all of our Electrolytes come from water, the majority are minerals and vitamins that come from our food. Unfortunately our depleted fruits and vegetables are not giving us enough because of grown in highly sterile soil lacking the microorganisms that feed the plants our essential minerals. Thus we need to supplement in some of the most important minerals like magnesium, selenium and zinc. Eating rich foods in potassium like bananas and avocados will help keep our potassium levels normal, however that will depend on how much you sweat and drink water. Drinking excess amounts of water can deplete you of electrolytes unless consciously adding them to the water. Drinking water without taking vitamins, minerals or adding electrolytes to your water can deplete you of energy, strength and stamina.
The body is always seeking a state of Homeostasis by balancing oxidation from oxygenation and antioxidation mostly from our own super antioxidant Glutathione, that we make in our liver. Homeostasis is the ability to maintain a constant internal stable balance in response to stresses in life. Bottom line, to maintain a healthy electrolyte balance stay hydrated and consume a nutrient rich diet full of colorful organic fruits and vegetables and meat and the first thing to examine when declining in health is your diet.
