Preeclampsia is a serious multi-symptom hypertensive disorder that develops during pregnancy or in the postpartum period up to six weeks after delivery. It is a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death in the United States.

The warning signs of preeclampsia include severe headaches, swelling in the hands and face, vision changes, nausea or vomiting, stomach or abdominal pain, sudden weight gain, and/or shortness of breath.

Women are encouraged to monitor their pregnancy symptoms, warning signs and maintain regular prenatal and postpartum appointments with medical professionals.
