Jewish Museum Milwaukee
The Museum explores the history of Milwaukee's Jewish Community to develop broad themes of tolerance
The Jewish Museum Milwaukee is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Jewish people in southeastern Wisconsin and celebrating the continuum of Jewish heritage and culture. The history of American Jews is rooted in thousands of years of searching for freedom and equality. We are committed to sharing this story and the life lessons it brings with it, so that we may enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of Jewish life and culture.

From the Bauhaus to MoMA, German-Jewish artist Anni Albers revolutionized textile art. While enrolled at the Bauhaus in Weimar, she turned to weaving after gender bias initially barred her from pursuing other disciplines. When the N***s condemned modern art as "degenerate," the Bauhaus closed, and Albers and her husband, fellow artist Josef Albers, were forced to flee Germany.
The pair rebuilt their lives in the United States, where Anni taught, continued her textile practice, and emerged as a pioneering modernist. In 1949, she became the first textile artist to receive a solo exhibition at MoMA.

Last month, Jewish Museum Milwaukee and Bader Philanthropies celebrated the legacy of Helen Daniels Bader through a day of with interactive activities, shared stories, and moments of reflection centered on identity, connection, and belonging.
Throughout the day, visitors participated in hands-on activities like affirmation card exchanges, symbolic self-portrait drawing, and a community coloring wall led by artist Jac Lahav.
Helen Daniels Bader was one of Milwaukee’s most beloved philanthropists and advocates for elder care and Alzheimer’s support. She made a lasting impact through her work and Bader Philanthropies’ continued investment in Milwaukee’s cultural landscape.
Thank you to all who joined us for a day celebration!

Gertrude Stein was a pioneering writer and one of the most influential supporters of modern art in the early 20th century.
Born in Pennsylvania to German-Jewish parents, she settled in Paris in 1903, where her Left Bank salon became a gathering place for artists and writers, including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and James Joyce. Alongside her lifelong partner, Alice B. Toklas, Stein helped shape the modernist movement while producing groundbreaking works such as "Three Lives" and "The Making of Americans."
You can view Stein's portrait in JMM's special exhibit, "48 Jews: Layers of Identity." Learn more here: https://loom.ly/zMB2uAg
