Overview/What's New: We want to give you a quick update on the tropics. A tropical disturbance located near the central Bahamas this afternoon is expected to move westward into the central Gulf of Mexico by early next week. A broad area of low pressure is expected to form well to the south of our area and the system has a Medium (50%) chance of tropical development as it moves west toward the western Gulf coastline during the early to middle part of next week. The only impact we expect for our area will be some increase in winds over the marine area, which will likely generate swell and an associated High Rip Current Risk along our local Alabama and western Florida panhandle beaches by Monday and Tuesday. Rain chances will remain very limited and mainly confined to areas near the coast Sunday and Monday as most of the moisture with this system remains displaced to our south.
Building heat will be the main weather story late this weekend and especially into the upcoming week. A Heat Advisory will go into effect again Sunday across southern portions of southeast Mississippi and into far southwest Alabama and coastal northwest Florida for heat index values up to 108°. Actual air temperatures could reach up to around 102° or 103° across parts of southeast Mississippi again Sunday afternoon. Similar temperatures are expected Monday before record breaking temperatures return Tuesday through Friday. Most areas away from the coast may see actual air temperatures between 100° and 105° each day, with heat index values potentially trending around or above 110° (especially mid to late week). The extended period of excessive heat could result in an increased potential for heat related illnesses next week.
*Impact 1 - Increased Rip Current Risk and Elevated Surf
WHAT: A High Rip Current Risk and surf building up to 3-5 feet along the Alabama and northwest Florida panhandle beaches
WHEN: Monday into Tuesday afternoon
WHERE: Alabama and northwest Florida panhandle beaches
CONFIDENCE: Confidence in the HIGH rip current risk is increasing.
*Impact 2 - Heat
WHAT and WHEN: Heat will build late this weekend and especially into the upcoming week. The hottest temperatures are expected Tuesday through Friday.
WHERE: A Heat Advisory goes into effect for southern portions of southeast Mississippi, far southwest Alabama, and coastal northwest Florida panhandle Sunday for heat indices up to around 108. Additional Advisories and/or Excessive Heat Watches/Warnings may be needed Tuesday through Friday as temperatures and heat index values increase over all of the area.
CONFIDENCE: Confidence in hot temperatures this week is high.
Please see the attached graphics for additional information. We mainly wanted to make everyone aware about the tropical disturbance in the Gulf and increased heat potential this upcoming week. Additional updates will be sent if needed.

August 21: National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness DayTM
Join us in observing the second annual National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day™ on Monday, August 21, 2023. Established by the not-for-profit organization, Facing Fentanyl™, today we remember loved ones lost to overdoses involving illegally made fentanyl, raise awareness of the dangers of fentanyl, and share ways to prevent fatal overdose.
Illegally made fentanyl is a growing threat in the United States and is a major factor in fatal drug overdoses. Nearly 200 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like illegally made fentanyl. Of note this year, fentanyl mixed with xylazine (a sedative not approved for human use) has been declared an emerging threat in the U.S. due to its impact on the opioid crisis. Xylazine has the potential to be life-threatening, especially when combined with opioids like fentanyl, and has been increasingly detected in the U.S. illegal drug supply.
CDC has sharable resources available to help educate and protect the public from overdoses involving fentanyl. Resources include factsheets, videos, and social media content, that explain the dangers of fentanyl and ways to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Take action and save lives. Learn more about illegally made fentanyl, fentanyl test strips, and how to use naloxone to reverse an opioid overdose.

Day of Caring is a community-wide initiative that connects volunteers and resources with local agencies and schools in need of support. We are recruiting volunteer teams looking to work and nonprofit agencies and schools that need projects done across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Last year, there were almost 600 volunteers with 60 projects in our two-county area! We would love to have you participate by hosting a project or forming a volunteer group. This is a chance to share your mission and work and potentially connect with new folks in the community.

Overview/What's New: A long duration heat wave is expected to continue through this week. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect today for coastal areas of Alabama, Escambia county Florida, Stone county and George counties in Mississippi. A heat advisory is in effect for all other areas. Confidence is too low to issue a heat watch for Wednesday, however, a heat advisory will likely be needed. The heat will likely peak Thursday and Friday. An excessive heat watch is in effect for much of the area on Thursday. Confidence is too low to issue a heat watch for Wednesday, however, a heat advisory will likely be needed. This will be a long duration heat wave as heat stress will likely increase into the weekend.
WHAT: Excessive heat with heat indices of 108 to 110 in the advisory area and 112 to 115 in the warning area. Heat indices Thursday will likely range 110 to 115 across most of the area with 115 to 120 over southeastern Mississippi, southwestern Alabama and the northwest Florida Panhandle.
WHEN: Each afternoon Today into the weekend.
WHERE: Highest heat indices confined to coastal areas today spreading inland by Thursday.
CONFIDENCE: Confidence today is moderate as there are some concerns that cloud cover could keep temps down a degree or two but any locations that see clearing will quickly reach criteria. Confidence is lower on Wednesday as a cluster of storms during the early afternoon may result in temperatures busting by 5 to 10 degrees leading to us not reaching criteria. However, if rain does not arrive then confidence in heat advisory to warning criteria quickly increases. Thursday is high confidence in heat indices above 110 to 115 areawide.
Additional Notes: Along with the excessive heat, another MCS could be possible during the early afternoon on Wednesday. Confidence in timing, location and strength of this system is currently low. However, given the potential instability ahead of this system some stronger wind gusts may accompany any storms that do develop. We are not outlooked for severe weather given the low confidence but if trends continue a mention of strong to severe storms Wednesday may be needed.

Overview/What's New: A complex setup remains in place across much of the southeast, making forecast uncertainty very high. With that said, several rounds of severe thunderstorms are forecast to impact the forecast area from today and continue into the early part of the new work week. An Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) has been expanded to cover the entire area today, and there is a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for much of the area on Monday. Additional severe threats are possible Tuesday; however, confidence is very low.
*Impact 1 - Severe Thunderstorms Today
WHAT: Multiple rounds of severe storms are expected, with damaging straight-line winds of at least 60 mph and hail the size of golf balls or greater. A tornado or two is also possible.
TIMING ROUND 1: Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible this morning (6 AM to 11 AM).
TIMING ROUND 2: Scattered to numerous severe storms are likely this afternoon and evening (2 PM to 11 PM).
TIMING ROUND 3: Although forecast confidence is low, there is a potential for an additional wave of severe thunderstorms between 2 AM and 7 AM.
CONFIDENCE: Forecast confidence is high on the threat of severe thunderstorms but low on the exact timing.
*Impact 2 - Severe Thunderstorms Monday into Monday night
WHAT: Severe storms capable of producing damaging winds of 60+ mph, large hail up to at least golf ball size, and possibly a tornado.
WHEN: Mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
CONFIDENCE: Forecast confidence is medium to high on the threat of severe thunderstorms but low on the exact timing.
*Impact 3 - Flash Flooding
WHAT: An additional 2 to 4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible, is expected, which may lead to flash flooding.
WHEN: A Flood Watch remains in effect through early Monday morning.
WHERE: All of southeast Mississippi, southwest and south-central Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle.
CONFIDENCE: Medium to High in occurrence but lower confidence regarding timing and location of heavy rainfall.
Additionally, there is a HIGH risk of rip currents for all area beaches through early next week.
