I've gotten quite a few calls recently asking about early intervention (birth through 3 years old)💛👶

One of the most common things I hear from parents is:
“Should we wait and see?” and “I’m not sure if this is normal or delayed speech.” 🤔

Sometimes, waiting is appropriate. But other times, early support can help prevent bigger challenges later — especially when communication difficulties begin affecting confidence, learning, or frustration levels 🌱

Research with young children indicates that the development of gestures from 9–16 months predicts language ability 2 years later 📚✨

Early communication skills are about so much more than “first words” 🗣️ Some early communication milestones include:

• Between 7–9 months: babbling long strings like “mamamama,” “upup,” or “babababa” 👶
• Between 9–10 months: giving objects and reaching up/raising arms 🙌
• Between 10–12 months: imitating and initiating gestures for social interaction and play, like blowing kisses or playing peek-a-boo 💋🫣

The good news? Young children often respond incredibly well to early, individualized support 🌿

How do you know if your child might need speech therapy? 🤔

First 💛
Needing speech support does not mean your child is behind or that you’ve done something wrong. Many bright, capable children benefit from extra support in specific areas.

You may want to look a little closer if:
• Strangers often have difficulty understanding your child 🗣️
• Your child becomes frustrated when trying to communicate
• Certain speech sounds are still unclear past the expected age
• Reading or spelling struggles seem connected to speech sound errors 📚
• You find yourself regularly “translating” for others

Sometimes it’s appropriate to monitor and give it time. Other times, early support can prevent bigger academic or confidence challenges later on.
