"What’s happening in America today is something darker than a misinformation crisis,” writes tech journalist Charlie Warzel in The Atlantic, reporting on the growing number of Americans who have dissociated from reality and are embracing insane conspiracy theories that can put human lives at risk — such as all the viral lies and violent threats about the recent hurricanes.
Their deceptive fearmongering is tearing our country apart and could cost us the election. Many voters already have a hard time separating fact from fiction, and all this disinformation confuses them even more. Those of us who phone bank in swing states speak with voters regularly, and we often hear them repeat some of these false claims, which cloud their judgment and can lead them to vote against their best interests.
This “post-reality” movement is led by Trump, Musk and their MAGA mob, amplified by right-wing media and shared widely by irresponsible social media and AI platforms. We’re witnessing a "cultural assault on any person or institution that operates in reality:” journalists, election workers, scientists, doctors, weatherpersons and first responders are all targets of their widespread attacks.
We have to stop this madness before it’s too late!

Thoughtful analysis of our local news pilot in Baltimore, by Bruce Wallace, a former Baltimore journalist, on Columbia Journalism Review. This article is factual, well-sourced and fairly presents a variety of perspectives about our experiment.
NewsTrust Baltimore: An Experiment in Civility The first thing you notice about NewsTrust Baltimore, an online aggregator of stories from local news sources, is how friggin’ civil all the commenters are.
Truthsquad.com fact-checked Barack Obama's claim that construction workers are "paying a higher tax rate than somebody pulling in $50 million a year."
http://bit.ly/truthsquad-tax
We found this claim to be HALF TRUE.
We could only find partial support for this sweeping generalization. The facts we reviewed suggest that the answer varies greatly depending on the individuals involved, and whether or not they pay taxes on wages or on investment income.
Do you agree or disagree with our findings? How can we improve the Truthsquad service? Please add your comments below, or email us to share your feedback ([email protected]).
This concludes our Truthsquad pilot for this month. We would like to thank all of the participants who contributed to this experiment. We really appreciate all of your great insights and hope you got as much from this experience as we did. The more we dig together, the more we learn as a community.
