Have you ever been broke? I mean... really broke?

Did you find that you were very careful with every penny you had?

This happened to me. I had sold my business and did an owner financing deal (first mistake). They guy defaulted and that put me in a really bad situation financially. I was still on the hook for all of the equipment payments.

As I began to dig my way out of the mess, I found myself looking at every single way I could save money. I think it became painful for my family.

The biggest hack came a few years later when we decided to build our own home. I designed the home and then built the majority of it. The best part buying used flooring, doors, windows, toilets sinks and kitchen cabinets to furnish the home with. We saved over $150,000. It wasn't until later that I really came to appreciate those times.

What money mistakes have you made in your life?

I have a great friend who is the opposite of this. He NEVER takes any risk.

Very interesting to watch how we all interact with our money... ESPECIALLY when it comes to investing.

If we weren't into any of those things that are experiencing an upswing before the upswing, chances are, you are too late. Do your homework before.

It is a lot like catching a wave in order to surf. Sometimes you will sit out in the ocean for a while waiting for a wave, then you begin to feel the pull of the water moving out deeper. It is at this point, you start positioning yourself to catch that wave. SAME concept!

Are you an investor, saver or spender?

Learning how to use money is a lot like a little kid learning how to eat. Sometimes we need to make a few messes to learn how it all works.

That being said, it goes to show that we can learn to make better decisions.

How do you learn?

Personal story... I have ADHD. Spent A LOT of time going in circles. It wasn't until my second time around in a business calculus class in college when I finally learned from a teacher what was going on with me. I couldn't sit still. My attention span was about 17 min in most classes... even if I enjoyed the class. I was fortunate. I had a professor who noticed this in me and she took me aside and asked if I would be interested in getting extra time on my tests. She explained that it appeared that I had a hard time concentrating and she suggested going to the disability resource center for testing. She explained that if they found anything, I could potentially get time and a half to take tests as well as get a room by myself.

I took her up on it since I was failing her class. To my surprise (not to anyone else who knew me), they found that I had ADHD. They offered me a room by myself, time and a half like she said and a some drugs. I took the first two.

It has taken years to learn to focus, but this professor involved me. She pulled me in and helped me to understand. This was HUGE for me.

How does it feel to be debt free?

There is definitely something that can be said about the feeling of being debt free.

What is even better though is when you are debt free and your money is working for you and not the other way around.

The key is to focus on a goal. Put a plan together and stick to it!

You typically have to work for money at first. Then you can make money work for you.

The important thing to keep in mind is to put the money to work as soon as possible.

Through my life, I have learned that one of the most powerful determining factors of success is consistency. The issue we ALL have is that we give up when we don't see results.

I used to own a fitness center years ago. The hardest thing about that industry is that the owners have come to expect that only about 17% of people who have memberships will actually use their memberships!

When investing, it is the same way. We can't expect to get rich quick. Sure, there can be some pretty darn lucky people. Those are the exceptions and not the rule.

Take it slow and easy. Time will make you a success in anything you put your mind into.

This quote always keeps me going. I often think of everything I learned while building my house. I had NEVER tried to do anything like it before and it scared me to death! After 1 1/2 years a shattered ankle and hundreds of youtube videos, we moved in. It was HARD. I made MANY mistakes, but I wouldn't change any of it!

There are so many times in our lives we will experience failures before the successes. The key is to keep going. If you feel right about it. Keep going!

We could all use a little extra income. There are always options. My favorite is to put your money to work for you.
