Wrapping up my week with some color mixing for this portrait commission. Isn’t she cute?!

I started this painting over 2 years ago as a first painting in a series. I got to a certain point and knew there was much more to do, but wasn’t sure what — both on this piece, and the rest of the series. So this painting sat in a frame, hanging on my wall for two years and it wasn’t until this week that I looked at it and realized I knew what was next — and also that everything I’ve learned since then has prepared me for moving it forward. Now it’s drying after some small tweaks and I’m ready again for some space (and dry time) before a few more tweaks. I used to feel like I needed to resolve every painting within days of starting and if I didn’t, the painting was a failure. And now, in retrospect, I think that was just me avoiding the discomfort of an unresolved painting, of not knowing what should happen next, and the discomfort that patience requires.

I’ve been playing around with glazing and scumbling layers and it’s blowing my mind. Here’s what just a few minutes did for these monochromatic studies. Swipe for the before.

I’m just over here trying to finish some paintings so I can start some more. One at a time. This one is “Paper, Cloth, Grapes - Layered.” 10x10 oil, to be framed in one of my pretty maple floater frames. It’s not up on my site yet, but available for $590. DM if you’re interested.

More progress today on this painting. It is *really* hard to photograph accurately, but I did my best! Just a few more areas to build up and then I’m calling it.

I spent part of my Sunday at refilling my gallery wall. I had so much blank space over there! Local peeps: go see what’s new 🤩

I spent my day obsessing over head placement for this portrait commission. It’s perfect. Now if I could just keep it in this spot 😜
