Beginning July 1st, a new Virginia law will seal the criminal records of many people convicted of low-level offenses.
“My thought is, this is a country of second chances, and if you’ve earned that second chance, then you deserve it,” George Townsend, founder of the law firm Clean Slate Virginia, told Arlington Now. “Once you’ve gone a certain amount of time, these convictions shouldn’t stop you from employment the rest of your life.”

If you have a prescription fraud conviction on your record, you may be able to have it sealed, but you must file a petition with the circuit court, meet the eligibility requirements, and demonstrate to a judge that continued public access to your record causes manifest injustice. Clean Slate Virginia is already preparing petitions for eligible clients ahead of the July 1, 2026 filing date.

Big news for Virginia!
Clean Slate Virginia founder, George Townsend, was recently featured in a story from Radio IQ/WVTF Public Radio discussing Virginia’s new Clean Slate law and what it means for individuals working to move forward after past convictions.
Beginning this summer, the law will allow many eligible Virginians to have qualifying records sealed from public view, opening the door to better access to employment, housing, and other opportunities that can be difficult to rebuild after a conviction.
