As volunteers at the Middleton Food Pantry, we’re often busy sorting food, stocking shelves, and organizing the upcoming July 4 Duck Race fundraiser. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day work and lose sight of why we do what we do.

I was reminded this Saturday.

A woman came in to register as a new client. She and her husband retired several years ago and had carefully planned to live on a fixed income. They were making it work, even with the increases in the cost of living. Then their daughter, son-in-law, and two young granddaughters lost their housing and moved in with them while they work to save enough money for a place of their own.

What had been a household of 2 suddenly became a family of 6.

As she shared her story, tears filled her eyes. She never imagined she would find herself needing help. She had planned for retirement, but she hadn’t planned for life’s unexpected twists.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to provide meat, milk, dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, pastries, canned goods, and pantry staples to help stretch their budget.

When she left, she gave me a hug and said, “God bless you for what you do.” And luckily, God does bless us. Every. Single. Day.

The truth is, it’s not just what we do. It’s what our volunteers, donors, and community do together. Stories like hers remind us that anyone can face circumstances they never expected, and sometimes a little help from neighbors can make all the difference.

That’s why the Middleton Food Pantry exists.
