Did you know raccoons are one of the most common predator to the wild turkey? Raccoons and opossums hold the number one spots for top predator to turkey nests. These nest predators destroy numerous nest every year preventing the turkey population from growing. The chart below, provided by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, shows harvest numbers through the years with the number of harvests fluctuating in the thousands. There are many factors for these decreases such as weather, poor land management, lack of farmland but mostly nest predation. As hunters and trappers, we have an obligation to assist the species we hunt to be able to flourish for the next generation of outdoorsman. Predator control is a necessity for future population growth.
