I am a field research scientist that studies the Everglades and post educational content about it along with giving academic/career pathway advice.
Guess the job market isn't looking so good after all. This is how I felt when I thought I wouldn't find a job after getting my Masters Degree in Biology. Even after 2 years of doing research in the Everglades, publishing a paper and gaining the necessary skills as a scientist, I didn't land positions I interviewed for. Luckily I was able to find one as soon as I graduated.
A long 6 years but it was definitely worth it. I knew that I wanted to become a biologist since a kid. Therefore, I took the necessary steps to accomplish my goals. Getting involved in research was also the driving factor that made me want to get my Masters.
This research got me my Masters Degree at 23 years old. I researched flocculent organic matter in the
Everglades for 2 years, focusing on its metabolism, biogeochemistry and microbes. The difference between flocculent organic matter and soil is that floc is unconsolidated (looser) and soil is more compact. Floc is the layer directly on top of soil and it helps with soil formation as well. It is also made up of decomposed matter throughout wetlands.
Thank you for covering me Black&Brown Success
There was a gator behind me this whole time and I didn't notice lol. Anyways, I wanted to explain what I researched and why it's important that I did research on it in the Everglades. Never in a million years that l'd think I'd be doing soil research out there. Definitely didn't regret it and wish I could do it all over again.
