Maria Patiño is a mixed-media artist and illustrator whose work examines cultural narratives, memory, and belonging through artist’s books, collage, printmaking, and painting.
The Home I Carry is an artist book made from raw, loose canvas, with every step of the process carried out intentionally. Stained with coffee, rusted metal, and ink. The surface holds wrinkles, pulls, and gestural marks that record touch, time, and presence. Hand stitching, sewing machine marks, embroidery, and found materials become traces of lived experience.
The work transforms personal memory into a living archive, honoring ancestors, past places, people, gestures, and relationships that shape who I am and where I belong. Rooted in histories of migration, it reflects on how home fractures, shifts, and re-forms over time. Home is not a fixed place. It is embodied and carried through gesture, texture, language, and ritual.
Inspired by the 16th-century cabinet of curiosity, the book gathers symbolic fragments instead of rare objects, creating a contemporary archive of memory.

Two of my mixed media artist books will be featured in “THREAD UPON THREAD” at MIFA – Miami International Fine Arts, running from May 3–27, 2025.
This powerful group exhibition, curated by Marco Caridad with curatorial advisor María Luz Cárdenas, explores the art of weaving stories, memory, and identity through textile, paper, and mixed media.
