Culturally sensitive care is important, especially for our most vulnerable populations. With the funded support of the National Council on Aging, Inc. five staff members of the Older Adults & Individuals with Disabilities division recently received certification in Adult Mental Heath First Aid.

This certification aims to reduce stigma pertaining to mental health and increase the likelihood of help-seeking behaviors.

In addition, a doctoral intern in the Psychology Services division provided training to older adults attending West Dade Adult Day Care Center and Carrie Meek Senior Center.  This training aims to reduce social isolation and increase social connections.

One participant shared, “I learned that loneliness can still exist even when you have family.  Since losing my wife, coming home to an empty house has been difficult.  This class helped me overcome barriers, become more open with others, and build a more diverse social circle.”

Head Start offers FREE CHILDCARE to eligible families with children from birth to age 5. 👶🏻👧🏽👦🏻 Our early childhood education program equips children with school-readiness skills for kindergarten and beyond. 💫

In recognition of Older Americans Month, the Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities division (OAIDS) celebrated our clients with an engaging workshop at the West Dade Adult Day Center.

Under this year’s theme “Championing Your Health” clients shared their best practices to champion their health. From healthy diets to physical exercise, mental stimulation activities, and disease-prevention practices - the older adult clients were enthusiastic in sharing how they prioritize their overall wellbeing and quality of life. 💫
