Known as one of the epicenters of Durham's Parrish Street holds a storied legacy, echoing the entrepreneurial spirit, achievements and struggles of its pioneering residents. Like other Black business districts across the country, such as the all-Black Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma or Alabama’s The Fourth Avenue District, Parrish Street once symbolized the pinnacle of African American economic success and cultural vitality.

Home to North Carolina Mutual, the first Black-owned insurance company in the state, Black entrepreneurs had also launched a mattress manufacturer, a cigar factory and a bank, among dozens of other businesses. Despite the segregation and discrimination faced by so many in the early 1900s, African Americans in Durham enjoyed the highest per capita income, and the highest rate of home ownership, in the country.

RainbowRow is a famous landmark in Charleston, South Carolina, consisting of 13 pastel-colored historic homes on East Bay Street, known for their vibrant, colonial-style architecture. Originally built in the 1700s as commercial buildings, they fell into disrepair after the Civil War until a restoration effort in the 1930s, led by Dorothy Porcher Legge, who painted a section pink, inspiring other owners to follow suit with a rainbow of colors. Today, it's one of the city's most photographed spots, with the colors believed to have originated from a colonial Caribbean color scheme, though myths suggest they helped sailors find their way home.
