The Mazda Savanna / RX-3 was one of the cars that helped establish Mazda’s reputation for doing things differently. Introduced in Japan in September 1971, the Savanna was created as a rotary-powered sporty model and was offered in coupe and sedan body styles. It started with Mazda’s 10A rotary engine before the more powerful 12A arrived in 1972.

The Savanna quickly became more than a stylish Japanese coupe. On the racetrack, its rotary power made it a serious competitor. Mazda’s historical records note that the Savanna battled the previously dominant Nissan Skyline GT-R, and in 1976 the model reached an extraordinary milestone: 100 victories in Japanese motorsport, a record for a single model at the time.

In 1973, Mazda introduced the Savanna AP, developed to meet Japan’s increasingly demanding emissions regulations while retaining the character of the rotary-powered model. For export markets, versions of the car were widely known as the RX-3, making “Savanna” and “RX-3” two names strongly connected with this era of Mazda rotary history.

Then came 1978 — the beginning of a completely new chapter. Mazda launched the Savanna RX-7, known outside Japan simply as the first-generation RX-7. Its low nose, front-midship layout, wedge-shaped body and aerodynamic design moved Mazda’s rotary sports-car formula into a new generation.

The Mazda Cosmo is more than just another classic Japanese coupe — it represents one of the most important chapters in Mazda’s rotary-engine history. The story began with the Cosmo Sport 110S, launched in 1967 as Mazda’s first rotary-powered production car. Its compact two-rotor engine, futuristic proportions and lightweight sports-car design made it unlike almost anything else on the road at the time. Mazda developed the rotary engine for years before finally bringing it into production, making the Cosmo Sport a major technological milestone for the company.

Then came the 1975 Cosmo AP, a completely different interpretation of the Cosmo name. Designed as a premium specialty coupe, it combined a distinctive American-inspired design with Mazda’s rotary technology. The “AP” stood for “anti-pollution,” reflecting the car’s development around Japan’s increasingly strict emissions regulations. Mazda says the Cosmo AP became a major sales success shortly after launch and was recognized with a Car of the Year award in early 1976.

In 1981, the Cosmo evolved again. The second-generation model moved toward a more aerodynamic and futuristic shape, featuring retractable headlights, a low bonnet and a thin grille. Its two-door version achieved a drag coefficient of 0.32, demonstrating how strongly Mazda was focusing on aerodynamic efficiency during this era.

And then came the 1990 Eunos Cosmo — perhaps the wildest chapter of the entire Cosmo story. Mazda introduced a sophisticated luxury coupe equipped with a three-rotor rotary engine and sequential twin turbochargers. Mazda describes it as the world’s first mass-production vehicle to combine a three-rotor rotary engine with sequential twin-turbocharging. The car produced 280 PS and represented Mazda’s pursuit of advanced performance and technology at the beginning of the 1990s.
