THE VOICE SHE COULD NOT HEAR

Mira had a voice that people remembered.

Not because she sang the loudest, or because she could hit the highest notes, but because something in her tone carried warmth like early morning sunlight finding its way through curtains. When she spoke, people turned. When she sang, people smiled.

But Mira didn’t believe a word of it.

To her, her voice was ordinary. Too soft. Too shaky. Too limited. She struggled with high notes, her pitch wavered whenever she tried to push her range, and she felt embarrassed anytime her voice cracked. So every time someone praised her, she assumed they were just being polite.

Her neighbors disagreed.

Whenever she hummed while sweeping the compound, the woman next door would pause her cooking and say,
“Mira, you don’t even know what God gave you.”

The children playing football would clap and shout,
“Aunty Mira, sing that song again!”
