No solution is immune from misconfiguration, threat actors, or disasters. You must have a disaster recovery plan. The UniSuper incident was so severe that Google's CEO and top executives publicly apologized. Hundreds of virtual machines and databases tied to a $125 billion account had to be restored. If they had lost all that data, the magnitude would have been catastrophic. UniSuper dodged a bullet—thanks to whoever decided to back up to another provider. That technical leader did an excellent job.

For startups, cloud adoption makes perfect sense. You can quickly implement and scale cost-effectively instead of buying hardware, hiring techs, and dealing with maintenance, backups, AC failures, and other issues. But after incidents like Google Cloud deleting UniSuper, business owners and techs are questioning where their data resides. The truth? Cloud works great for most small to medium businesses. But a hybrid approach is also very viable. It all depends on your organization's needs

Cloud comes with a cost, but it removes a lot of overhead. Managing physical on-prem servers means dealing with firmware updates, hard drive maintenance, cooling measures even an AC failure can take your data down. The bottom line: no matter your setup, you need a disaster recovery plan. For most small to medium businesses, cloud makes sense. But a hybrid approach is also very viable. It all depends on your organization's needs.

There's a common misconception about whether data is safer in the cloud or not. The real question you need to ask yourself: if Google or Microsoft lost all your data tomorrow, how would you get back operational? If you have an answer, you're ahead of the game. If not, stop relying solely on them. Talk to a technical expert and start implementing disaster recovery and backups. Maintain recent or full backups. Your future self will thank you.
