In this lesson, Ms. Jo accompanies her student on the piano, helping them develop steady rhythm, confident listening skills, and the ability to play as part of an ensemble. 🎹 Are scales old-fashioned? Maybe. Are they still important? Absolutely.

Scales are the building blocks of music. They help students develop finger strength, coordination, technique, note recognition, and an understanding of key signatures. They also make learning new pieces easier by building the patterns and muscle memory musicians use every time they play.

Sometimes the most timeless exercises are the ones that make the biggest difference. 💜🎶

🎹 What does staccato mean? 🎶

Staccato means to play the notes short, light, and detached instead of smooth and connected. On the piano, this is achieved by using a quick, controlled touch so each note has its own distinct sound.

Learning different articulations like staccato helps students add expression, improve technique, and bring their music to life. It’s not just about playing the right notes—it’s about how you play them! 💜

🎶 Harmony is more than just singing together—it’s learning to listen.

In this lesson, Ms. Jo and her student practice singing different harmony parts, then switch roles to sing each other’s part. Why is that important? Being able to sing multiple parts strengthens pitch accuracy, ear training, musical independence, and helps students understand how each voice contributes to the overall sound.

The best musicians don’t just know their part—they understand how all the parts fit together. 💜

🎼 Creating music from the ground up! 🎶

In this lesson, our student composed an original piece in 6/8 time and then brought it to life on the piano. Composition challenges students to apply rhythm, melody, and music theory while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and musical independence.

There’s nothing more exciting than watching a student become both a musician and a composer! 💜
