From 'ruff' seas to safe harbor.

A U.S. Coast Guard Station Mayport boat crew assisted a man and his dog aboard a disabled 21-foot vessel that was dragging anchor in rough weather approximately 4 miles offshore Mayport, Florida, Saturday.

Before you leave the dock, leave a float plan.

A U.S. Coast Guard Station Ponce de Leon Inlet boat crew rescued two mariners aboard a disabled 25-foot recreational vessel approximately 18 miles east of Ormond Beach, Tuesday.

The vessel experienced a complete power outage and was unable to return to port as planned. The Station Ponce De Leon boat crew located the vessel and safely towed it toward Ponce Inlet before transferring the tow to commercial salvage closer to shore.

The reminds mariners to always file a float plan with a trusted contact, carry reliable communication equipment, and ensure their vessel is properly maintained before heading offshore.

On Friday, in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami command center, rescue crews from U.S. Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Miami, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Robert Yered and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary rescued a mariner approximately 20 miles east of Miami Beach.

The mariner in distress was found aboard a disabled personal watercraft in the midst of inclement weather.

“We’re grateful this mariner was safely rescued and reunited with his loved ones,” said Lt. Cmdr. Vladimir Jimenez, Sector Miami’s search and rescue mission coordinator for the case. “The safe recovery of this individual reflects the teamwork and coordination between our Southeast District Coast Guard crews and our partner agencies.”

This rescue highlights the importance of understanding your vessel’s capabilities before heading offshore. Personal watercraft can be especially vulnerable to changing weather and mechanical issues far from shore. Plan ahead, monitor marine forecasts, carry proper safety equipment, and always ensure your trip matches your vessel’s intended use.
