Dear President Donald J. Trump
I write to you today not just as a citizen of Cambodia, but as someone who deeply admires your unwavering love for your country and the powerful words you shared on July 4, 2020.
When you spoke of lifting up all Americans, restoring greatness, and protecting the soul of your “beautiful country” against those who would tear it down, your message echoed far beyond your shores. Here in Cambodia, we understand what it means to fight for dignity, stability, and pride in one’s nation. Your words stirred something in the hearts of many of us who still believe in the sacred bond between freedom and order, tradition and progress.
Cambodia has known hardship—wars, revolutions, the burden of rebuilding—but we have also known honor. In times of need, we stood with the United States. In February 2020, when the MS Westerdam was turned away by many, Cambodia opened its arms—not for profit, not for politics—but because it was the right thing to do. Because that is what friends do for one another. Cambodia—a small nation with a big heart. No deals required it. We did it because true friends help when it’s inconvenient.
As President Trump stood on America’s sacred soil defending history, heritage, and hope, his message reminded us that love for one’s country is not division—it’s devotion. That defending law, faith, family, and national pride is not radical—it’s responsible.
