How Federal Policy Is Reshaping the Funding of Youth Behavioral Health Treatment 08/11/2026

We’re proud to share this timely article published by Behavioral Health News and authored by MDFT International’s Dr. Gayle Dakof, Dr. Cindy Rowe, and Adi Mohamed, MEd.

The article highlights an important opportunity for states and communities: federal policy is increasingly creating pathways to invest in evidence-based treatments that strengthen families and improve outcomes for young people. As the behavioral health funding landscape continues to evolve, understanding these opportunities, and how to translate them into sustainable services for youth and families, is critical.

Thank you to Behavioral Health News for providing a platform for this important conversation.

When a young person is experiencing behavioral health challenges, the whole family can be affected.

MDFT is a family-centered, evidence-based treatment model that works with youth, parents, and caregivers together. By strengthening relationships, improving communication, and building on each family's strengths, MDFT helps families work toward healthier outcomes together.

This week, Dr. Cindy Rowe had the pleasure of joining the team at YSS for their annual MDFT Booster at the organization's beautiful new Ember facility in central Iowa.

Together with MDFT Trainer Andrea Dickerson, Supervisor Sarah Zollar, 7 therapists, and 5 interns, the team shared meaningful conversations, strengthened clinical skills, and reflected on the work that brings them together.

The sessions were inspiring and a powerful reminder that investing in clinicians strengthens the care and support families receive every day.

Thank you, YSS, for your dedication to the young people, families, and communities you serve. 💙

Family therapy doesn't change lives by talking about problems. It changes lives by changing what happens between people. That's the model behind MDFT: clinicians working directly with youth, parents, and families together in real time, across every domain of a young person's life, from the individual to the family to the community.

Parents aren't observers in this work. They're treated as the most powerful agents of change their child has. This is evidence-based, developmentally grounded family treatment, built on research, not slogans.

No parent should have to navigate challenges alone.

When a young person is struggling, it affects the whole family, and many of the people who are part of their everyday life.

That’s why MDFT works not only with adolescents, but also with parents and caregivers, families, and, when helpful, schools and other community partners. Together, these relationships create a stronger foundation for positive change.
