Why Is The Bunny Associated With Easter?

Easter is the Christian holiday which celebrates Jesus’s resurrection. Children, however, prefer to enjoy treats brought by the Easter Bunny, coloring eggs and often enjoying some time off school as many school’s spring breaks are scheduled around this time.

But where does the Easter Bunny come from, and what does it have to do with the Jesus?
The Easter Bunny started to become a staple of Easter imagery when it was first mentioned in a book by Georg Franck von Frankenau in 1680. The book titled “De ovis paschalibus” (About Easter Eggs) references a tradition of an Easter Hare bringing eggs to children.

In the 1800′s, German immigrants to the US, brought with them the tradition of hunting for Easter eggs which further helped solidify and integrate the Easter Bunny into the holiday, with the bunny being the one responsible for hiding the eggs. Before more was known about biology of hares, it was long believed that they were hermaphrodites. This lead to the widespread belief that a hare could reproduce without losing its virginity. Church leaders immediately associated this with the Virgin Mary, who was said to give birth to Jesus without knowing the touch of a man.three hares easter

The three hares motif is also used by Christians to represent the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity represents “One in Three and Three in One” which is often depicted by a triangle or three interlocking shapes.

This motif can be commonly found in English churches and generally appears in a prominent place of the church. Being displayed in a such prominent location suggests that the motif had an important meaning to the religion.

Rabbits and hares were also symbols of fertility for many cultures, going back before the birth of Christianity. This is thanks to their large litters, usually in early spring, which coincides with the Vernal Equinox and Easter. Females have the ability to conceive a second litter of offspring while still pregnant with the first. This is known as superfetation, which is where the saying, “to breed like rabbits” has its origins.

Five Reasons to Avoid Plastic Containers

The great American novelist Normal Mailer once said, “I sometimes think that there is a malign force loose in the universe that is the social equivalent of cancer, and it’s plastic. It infiltrates everything. It’s metastasis. It gets into every single pore of productive life.” You would think this was a recent quote, something he might have said after the green movement became popular. But no – he said this in 1983, before America’s obsession with everything plastic was even close to reaching its peak. What amazing foresight he had.

Plastic has its role in modern society. It’s an essential part of our cars, computers, mobile phones, children’s toys – and practically most everything we use on a day-to-day basis. But there’s one place where plastic has worn out its welcome – and that’s as a container for the food we eat and the water we drink.

The bottom line is that plastic is made from toxic materials. It’s a known fact that these toxins can leach into whatever they come into contact with. And it’s a known fact that when the compounds that make up plastic are ingested, they damage your body on a cellular level and cause health problems.

The pundits will say that the human body can easily handle the “small” amounts (which the government insultingly likes to call “acceptably safe levels”) of toxins that are ingested from plastic. But I find this excuse to be one of the world’s biggest cop-outs. If the human body wasn’t designed to ingest plastic, then no amount is good. Period.
Here are 5 reasons why you should avoid plastic containers:

1. Toxic compounds in plastic can make you really sick.

It’s typical to suffer from a variety of health problems as you age. But is this just “part of getting older”? Or is this perhaps the result of a toxic overload in the body? It’s common knowledge that illness and disorders such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, heart disease, vision impairment and many others health problems are all on the rise. Could this be in some way associated with the increasing amount of plastic in our lives? Plastic food and beverage containers became popular fairly recently (in the 1970s) and have become ubiquitous in our lives since then. More and more research is proving that toxic compounds found in plastic cause health problems ranging from cancer to infertility.

2. There’s no such thing as a safe plastic.

Plastics that contain the super toxic compound bisphenol A (BPA) have been in the news a lot lately. And for this reason, consumers have been duped into thinking that if a product is “BPA-free” it’s perfectly safe. But this is a lie. Lots of companies have caught on to the fact that they can sell more of a product if it’s labeled as “BPA-free.” But guess what? It may be BPA-free, but in its place, these companies are using BPS, a close cousin of BPA that may be equally as toxic! The bottom line is – you can’t 100% trust that any plastic doesn’t contain compounds that are toxic to your body.

3. Plastics can cause fertility and reproductive problems.

The ability to produce a healthy child is a wondrous miracle and an amazing event in one’s life. But toxic compounds found in plastic could be making this difficult, if not impossible, for millions of people. What was once speculation is now becoming fact as more and more research is proving that this is a very real problem. For example, almost all plastics contain toxic chemicals that have a negative effect on immunity and hormone regulation, both of which directly affect fertility. Specifically, BPA has been found to make it more difficult for women to conceive and to cause increased risk of miscarriages. New research is also showing that toxins found in plastic can cause birth defects and developmental problems in children.

4. Chemicals in plastic can make you fat.

There are lots of reasons why nearly two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese. But one of them may be the vast amounts of plastics our food and beverages come in contact with. After all, America is the world’s largest consumer of disposable plastic containers. Interesting new research published in Environmental Health Perspectives explains that a chemical widely used in plastics, called bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), may actually cause stem cells to become fat cells. According to one of the study’s authors, “Exposure to these kinds of chemicals can reprogram your metabolism and make it more likely for you to store calories instead of passing them through.” Have you found that losing weight is next to impossible, despite eating less and exercising more? Perhaps it’s chemicals in plastics that make losing weight harder than it needs to be.

5. Plastics are just terrible for our planet.

Gay Couple Kicked Out Mall
A gay couple was kicked out of a California mall after they were reprimanded for kissing and holding hands. (KTXL)

A gay couple was reportedly kicked out of a California mall for kissing and holding hands, even though the center's staff apparently do not prohibit straight couples from showing similar public displays of affection.

According to Fox's KTXL in Sacramento, Daniel Chesmore and Jose Guzman were told to leave the Westfield Galleria in Roseville, Calif., on March 2 after a security guard reprimanded them. KTXL also reported that a guard claimed "any couple" displaying affection could be reprimanded.

However, when a reporter from the station went undercover at the mall, she saw straight couples embracing in the same manner without any repercussions. And though a mall representative later told the network that people who violate the Code of Conduct are asked to leave the property, KTXL couldn't find any mention of kissing and holding hands in the guidelines.

“I feel like we’re always treated differently because we’re gay," Guzman said. "It makes me sad.”

After the story went public, critics flocked to the page for the Westfield Galleria at Roseville and condemned the mall's alleged anti-gay actions.

"Shame on you. I am truly disgusted by the behavior of those employed by you. You guys are obviously bullies that pick out those that are different. I mean who the hell goes and follows a couple around and count the times they kiss?" one Facebook user wrote.

"I'm shocked by the actions of your security guard and the general manager," wrote another. "I will not be shopping with ANY Westfield mall or otherwise until the guard and management make a personal apology to the couple in question and a public apology. As for the guard, what a lack of professionalism saying 'I counted you kissing 25 times'?"

A representative for the Westfield Galleria in Roseville was not immediately available to comment.

Unfortunately, the incident that occurred at this California mall is not isolated.

A New Zealand gay couple was kicked out of a bar in February after they were seen kissing on the dance floor, according to The New Zealand Herald. In January, another gay couple was reportedly asked to leave a Dallas, Texas, bowling alley after a manager refused to give them a new lane and claimed the venue was a "family environment," the Dallas Voice reported.

An African American restaurant chef named George Crum invented the potato chip in 1853. A customer ordered a plate of French fries and complained about their thickness. In an effort to satisfy the customer, Crum sliced the potatoes extremely thin before deep frying them. The thin, sliced potatoes became crunchy after being cooked. The customer liked them so much that they became the signature dish at Crum’s restaurant and inspired other chefs.

The first American-made automobiles were introduced to U.S. consumers shortly before the turn of the century. The Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903 and with it American consumers began to discover the adventures of the open road. In the early years of the 20th century it was not uncommon for bicycles, animal-powered wagons, and new gasoline-powered motor vehicles to share the same streets and roadways with pedestrians. Accidents were frequent. After witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse-drawn carriage, Garrett Morgan took his turn at inventing a traffic signal. Other inventors had experimented with, marketed, and even patented traffic signals, however, Garrett Morgan was one of the first to apply for and acquire a U.S. patent for an inexpensive to produce traffic signal. The patent was granted on November 20, 1923. Garrett Morgan also had his invention patented in Great Britain and Canada. Garrett Morgan stated in his patent for the traffic signal, "This invention relates to traffic signals, and particularly to those which are adapted to be positioned adjacent the intersection of two or more streets and are manually operable for directing the flow of traffic... In addition, my invention contemplates the provision of a signal which may be readily and cheaply manufactured."

The Morgan traffic signal was a T-shaped pole unit that featured three positions: Stop, Go and an all-directional stop position. This "third position" halted traffic in all directions to allow pedestrians to cross streets more safely.

Garrett Morgan's hand-cranked semaphore traffic management device was in use throughout North America until all manual traffic signals were replaced by the automatic red, yellow, and green-light traffic signals currently used around the world. The inventor sold the rights to his traffic signal to the General Electric Corporation for $40,000. Shortly before his death in 1963, Garrett Morgan was awarded a citation for his traffic signal by the United States Government.

Garrett is also the inventor of the gas mask.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

Guess which stars supports Gay marriages/relationships???

Anne Hathaway... Anne Hathaway, who's been outspoken about her support for her gay brother, told Chelsea Handler in Interview, "The other thing I want to say about Jersey is they need to get on the New York bandwagon and legalize gay marriage." She continued, "But I think everybody should do that. It's not a specifically Jersey thing."

Brad Pitt... Though it was revealed recently that Pitt and longtime partner Angelina Jolie are now engaged (they previously said they would not get married until marriage was an option for all people), the actor has been a staunch supporter of the LGBT community. In 2009 he donated $100,000 to fighting Proposition 8, the California law which made same-sex marriage illegal in the state. Pitt said: "Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8." Pitt also recently starred in a production of Dustin Lance Black's play "8," based on the Prop 8 trial.

Cyndi Lauper... Lauper launched her Give a Damn Campaign to raise awareness for the struggles of gay and transgender youth. "For far too long, dogma and fear have torn apart too many families," she wrote in The Huffington Post in 2011. "It is a time when the heart must lead the way when your child shares this personal and life-changing moment with you."

Clint Eastwood... "These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don't give a f*** about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We're making a big deal out of things we shouldn't be making a deal out of. They go on and on with all this bulls*** about "sanctity" -- don't give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want."

Drew Barrymore... "I am who I am because of the people who influenced me growing up, and many of them were gay. No one has any right to tell anyone what makes a family."

Charles Barkley... "A gay player would only be judged based on
"whether he can play or not. If somebody is gay, that's their own business. But it bothers me how people try to say that jocks are not going to like a gay. ... I think gay people should be allowed to get married and God bless them, that's their own business. Listen, if a guy can't play that's the only time we don't want to play with him. We don't care about all that extracurricular stuff."

Steven Spielberg... Brad Pitt wasn't the only one to donate to the fight against Prop 8. In 2008 Steven Spielberg also plunked down $100,000 in hopes of defeating the anti-marriage equality bill.

Spielberg, who made the donation with his wife Kate Capshaw, said:
"By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation. Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."

Miley Cyrus... Miley Cyrus
In August 2011, Cyrus tattooed a small "equals" sign on her middle finger, in support of same-sex marriage. She later told Glamour that the idea of not being able to marry the person you love more than anything in the world makes her "feel sick to her stomach."

Sean Penn... Penn played the role of slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk and was awarded an Oscar for his incredible portrayal. During his acceptance speech Penn said: "I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grand-children's eyes if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone."

Pink... Pink chose to set the video for her 2010 hit "Raise Your Glass" at a gay wedding. "I threw my best friend's wedding in my backyard -- [she] is gay and she married her wife, and it was absolutely beautiful," she told MTV News. "At the end of it, her mom said, 'Why can't this be legal?' and started crying. It was just the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen, so that's why I'm doing it in my video. "

Russell Simmons...The entertainment mogul has long been an ally to the LGBT community. In a 2009 Huffington Post blog written as an open letter to then NY Governor David Paterson, Simmons said: "You have recently done this in showing support for the legalization of gay marriage. History will show you are right and will we support you on this issue."

Jennifer Aniston...Following New York's historic passage of a same-sex marriage bill in June 2011, Jennifer Aniston told MTV News: "It's great! I thought it was unbelievable. So exciting in this time and that it happens to be Gay Pride weekend. What a great weekend."

Natalie Portman...Portman and husband Benjamin Millepied were among the stars who signed Freedom to Marry's "I Do" open letter, which called on President Obama to declare his support for marriage equality.

Mary J. Blige Explains Support For Gay Marriage While Being A Born-Again Christian

Although she identifies herself as a born-again Christian, Mary J. Blige fully supports same-sex marriage.

The Grammy award-winning hip-hop superstar silenced her naysayers in an interview with Los Angeles Confidential. "I would say this to those people: I’m not God," she told writer Kevin Sessums. "God said not to judge anyone lest you be judged. That’s it. Who am I to point my finger? You’ve got to walk in love. To say you do not want people to be happy is so mean, so not me."

Blige, 41, previously expressed her thoughts on same-sex marriage at the Democratic National Convention last year, telling civil rights attorney and radio host Yetta Kurland, "I think people that support love, it’s amazing. It’s love."

In 2007, she told The Advocate, "The majority of my fans are gay ... I have to really make sure that they know I’m paying attention to the fact that they support me, and I support them."
