Interesting Facts About Locksmiths

When you have a key that won’t work or a door that you can’t open, a locksmith is the first person you’ll turn to for their range of expert skills.

Able to duplicate keys, remove locks and install new ones, locksmiths are an extremely valued profession.

But these masters of the keys have a long and fascinating history; here’s a few interesting facts about locksmiths that you may not have known.

The Egyptians used locks

The locksmith profession is widely recognised as having been officially launched in 1799 but the use of locks goes back much further than this.

In fact, there’s evidence of locks being used as long ago as the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago, when they were made from large wooden bolts. The Romans took this idea and developed it further, using iron for the locks and bronze for the keys.

The very oldest key based lock uncovered by archeologist’s dates from 704 BC and was found in the ruins of Emperor Sargon II’s palace. The principles which it used, namely the pin tumbler, are still utilized in modern locksmithing today.

Locksmiths work with law enforcement

Although they may often work on locks, the skills of a locksmith extend to the duplication of keys too. And the key doesn’t have to be physically present for a locksmith to be able to copy it.

In some areas of law enforcement, locksmiths are used to help police gain access to areas which they have been granted a warrant to enter. Without a key to get in, the only other option would be to smash the door in but causing damage is often less than ideal.

Locksmiths work with the police to duplicate keys thus providing entry without force. Locksmiths are able to duplicate almost any kind of key so are an important ally for law enforcement.

Lack of regulation

Locksmiths all around the world are treated in a very lax manner by authorities, with very few countries requiring the trade to be regulated or certified.

With access to your home, and the ability to duplicate keys, the choice of locksmith is a very important one. Hiring a rogue locksmith could not just mean the job doesn’t get done properly but you could also be compromising your own security.

When hiring a locksmith, it’s essential to do your research and make sure that you use one that is either certified or is established and comes with recommendations and good reviews.

Locksmith opens $250 safe using a magnet in a sock | Geek-Cetera | Geek.com 10/05/2016

If you want to protect your valuables at home, then investing in a safe is a good idea. At the very least it acts as an extra barrier and therefore deterrent if a thief manages to break into your home. However, that deterrent isn’t worth much when it takes less than 10 seconds to gain entry to many of the popular safes available on the market today.

The YouTube channel Mr. Locksmith is run by Terry Whin-Yates and focuses on locksmith training, including lockpicking and different opening methods. Terry is in the business of improving locksmithing and ensuring people’s valuables are kept safe. But he’s also keen to point out just how poor the security products we rely on can be.

A case in point is the electronic sentry safes you can buy at most retailers for around $250. In the video below, Terry manages to open one in just a few seconds using a rare earth magnet in a sock. The fault? The manufacturers used a nickel solenoid in the locking mechanism.

If you have one of these safes at home, then your valuables may be protected from fire, but they aren’t safe from a thief carrying a magnet in a sock. It may be worth investing in a new safe, dependent of course on the value of what you are keeping inside.

Ultimately your choice of security comes down to how valuable the goods are you want to protect. Better security, be it a safe or a padlock, will cost more money. However, retailers are more than happy to overcharge you for inferior products.
