CHARLIE KIRK
Yesterday, our nation lost a great young man. Charlie Kirk is an example of courage and integrity. His Judeo-Christian values were the foundation of his convictions and the force behind his search for truth. He knew that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and Life. Charlie defended truth and life with all the gifts and graces that the Lord gave him. A brilliant young mind who, like Abraham Lincoln, taught himself, which requires self-discipline and perseverance. Through his speeches and debates, one could see clearly that theology, philosophy, and politics were among his greatest passions. Hatred killed his body. Hatred silenced him in the same manner hatred tried to silence Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was working yesterday afternoon when simultaneously received several text messages. Since the phone kept going and saw that the text messages were from my young son, my eldest daughter, and then my sister, I had to check. “Charlie Kirk was shot!” read the message. I got sick to my stomach. Tears well up on my eyes. I asked, “Is he still alive?” My daughter said, “yes, he was taken to the hospital.” I had to ask for a break from the queue and fell on my knees sobbing, asking the Lord for Charlie’s life. In less than a minute, another message came in from my sister, “He is dead, it has been confirmed.” I mourn like many conservatives in the United States. I am in state of shock. However, hatred is real. It is all around us. We, Christians know that Love and forgiveness are more powerful.
I opened my eyes this morning, and the first thought in my mind was Charlie’s young widow and his two little children. My husband and I prayed for them. Then I read today’s Scriptures read among Catholics around the world. The Word is from the Gospel of Luke 6: 27-38. I am only going to share with you one verse and half of the next one, which goes like this:
“To you who hear I say, LOVE your ENEMIES. Do GOOD to those who HATE you, BLESS those who COURSE you, PRAY for those who MISTREAT you.”
Hate is deaf. Anger fogs reasoning. Pride blinds. But love in Christ is the opposite. True love, brothers and sisters, is tough. True love will tell you what is right and what is wrong because true love wants what is good for humanity. I do not know the depth of Charlie Kirk’s Christian beliefs, but who goes down to the pit of hell to preach?
Only someone who loves can do that. Charlie for sure loved his country. He wanted America to be great again. What is wrong with that? He loved his wife and his two children so much that he wanted a better future for them. Is it not what all Americans want? God bestow on Charlie Kirk the gifts of clarity of mind, eloquence, exquisite common sense, passion, zeal. He was a big light in this world. He helped to bring meaning to the lives of millions of young men and women around the United States and beyond. He helped young people to think critically. He enlightened many who struggled with gender dysphoria or homosexuality. Someone would question me saying, “How you dare to say that ?!” Well, “loving your enemy,” for a Christian is to help the lost souls to find the way back to God. Tolerance is a funny word or maybe a phony word. Jesus said: “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: I have come to bring not peace but a sword.” –Matthew 10:34.
What is Jesus saying? What does he mean?
Well, brothers and sisters, he is basically saying that HE, the Word of God made flesh is a two-edge sword (Heb 4:12). Truth cuts to the core of the human heart and soul. Truth hurts and feels unkind and intolerant to those who live in darkness. Truth divides. Is it not that what Jesus did in his time and in our times? Charlie Kirk has been called a misogynist, a n**i, a racist and many other things because truth hurts. When he went to colleges and universities, he challenged college students to debate him to reason, to question their ideas. He defended the sacredness of life from conception to death. He defended freedom of speech; he denounced the lies of socialism and communism. It is very sad, but Charlie was not always welcomed at these places, but he stayed the course because he wanted to bring light and truth to young college students and even professors whose minds have been corrupted.
Charlie Kirk will not be silenced. He will be remembered as another martyr of freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religious worship. His voice will continue to move and inspire the young minds who followed him through media. In Catholicism, we remember the famous words of Tertullian: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” The Church are the Christians. The values under attack in America are the Judeo-Christian values. Charlie Kirk’s blood will raise many after him. Let us not forget that it is necessary to truly love and forgive, to pray for the souls of our enemies, but speak the truth fearlessly because Christ and His Holy Spirit has been bestowed on us.
Charlie Kirk, rest in peace. Your legacy will live on. I offer my condolence to his widow and children, and to everyone who is mourning his passing from this insane world. For a Christian, there is hope because Christ vanquished death and brought us eternal life. Courage! Sara T.
