👩🏼‍⚕️ Anatomy of the Philtrum
The philtrum (Greek: philtron = love potion is a vertical groove in the midline portion of the upper lip bordered by two lateral ridges or pillars. It lies between the base of the nose (subnasale) and the vermilion border (labiale superius), which is also designated as what we refer to as the 📐 nasolabial distance.
The lower end of the groove and the ridges form the central portion of the Cupid's bow of the vermilion border 🐛 👄

💉 Injectors often reference “shortening the ergotrid” “increasing vertical height” and “shortening the upper lip” to refer to an aesthetic objective that can be achieved via a variety of modalities: Fillers, Dysport and Surgery.

👩🏼‍⚕️: Because a shorter upper lip is considered to be a more youthful feature. Shortening the distance between the upper lip 👄 and the nose 👃. When we are working with dermal fillers to create a beautiful lip, we are addressing a variety of visual cues around the mouth that contribute to the overall result. The Philtrum, ergotrid, vermillion border, oral commissures, cupids bow etc are among the list of features we assess to create beautiful lips. Often times, this requires multiple sessions to adequately address the various contributing factors that culminate into a “wow” result.

👩🏼‍⚕️ This amazing patient knew EXACTLY what she wanted and her wording was so eloquent I just had to share-

👸🏻Her request: “Interested in a lip flip because my top lips hide when I smile, and a little bit of filler as this is my first time. I like a natural look, and I definitely don’t want to have a bubbly top lip or a defined ledge on my top lip. I hope this makes sense. Just looking for a natural look, my natural shape, except better!”

We used .5ml filler to give a subtle plump to her upper and lower lips 👄 and build vertical height. Lastly we injected dysport and performed a “lip flip 🤸‍♀️ “ just slightly above the upper lip to relax her lip when she smiles. In 2 weeks the dysport will take full effect and further enhance the overall result and alleviate some of the inward curling of her upper lip when she smiles. Did we deliver? 🏆
