Fully grown, fully flown… and me? Still over here trying not to text him “Did you eat?” every five minutes.

Empty nest and a full heart.
Because the truth is, I didn’t just raise a son… I broke cycles so he could live freely.

For 80 years, my mother has been the woman who made sure everyone else had what they needed before she ever thought about herself. So imagine her surprise when we decided that turning 80 meant it was finally her turn to be celebrated… loudly, joyfully, and with a little Dominican flair.

What started as a secret plan turned into laughter, dancing, beach days, family reunions, and enough food to feed a small village (really it was) because apparently when Dominicans celebrate, we do not believe in moderation. Seeing her surrounded by so much love, back in the beauty of her homeland, felt like healing in real time.

In many ways, this moment is also part of the journey behind my memoir Enough with the Secrets, Mama! a story that has helped me mend and understand my maternal relationship in ways I never imagined. Your support of this book has meant more than you know, and moments like this remind me that healing can look like sunshine, sand, music, and a mother finally learning how to enjoy her life.

A 🇩🇴 Family Reunion with no trending sound 🎥 . Some secrets couldn’t stay hidden for long… but the best ones were saved for the moment she arrived.

Mama’s 80th birthday celebration in the Dominican Republic quickly became a series of beautiful reunions. One by one, family members surprised her, filling the room with tears, laughter, and the kind of joy that only family can bring.

In many ways, this moment felt like a living reflection of my memoir, Enough with the Secrets, Mama! because sometimes healing begins when families come together and the silence finally gives way to love.

This… a small glimpse into why I chose to celebrate Mama’s 80th birthday in grand form.

My mother spent most of her life choosing practicality over celebration. Focusing on necessities and caring for everyone else. Birthdays were never really a priority. And without realizing it, that way of living quietly trickled down to us. When a mother doesn’t celebrate herself, her children sometimes grow up not quite knowing how to celebrate themselves either. Case in point 🙋🏽‍♀️

So here she is… home 🇩🇴… at Boca Chica Beach, a virgin piña colada in hand, wind in her hair, dancing in her seat and laughing like a woman rediscovering joy.

In celebrating her, I realized I was also taking a step toward celebrating my own life. We’re both still works in progress, but this felt like a big step forward for us.

Some patterns are inherited. Healing is when we choose differently.

Sharing her story in Enough with the Secrets, Mama! was my way of honoring the daughter who always wanted to see her mother happy. Take a moment today to celebrate someone who rarely celebrates themselves.

Watching my mother on this flight back to the Dominican Republic stirred something deep in my heart.
