Testosterone Injections and Risk of Heart Attacks, Stroke, and Death 06/29/2021

MISLEADING ARTICLE ABOUT TESTOSTERONE

This Article i found on the web site Rxconsult.com titled
"Testosterone Injections and Risk of Heart Attacks, Stroke, and Death"
The article has subtitle "Clinical Studies Showing Risk of Heart related effects". It does not state Increased Risk.
The author of the article Jonah-Lynn Padigus, PharmD states that
" The study found that testosterone use was associated with a 30% increase in risk of stroke, heart attack, and death."
He then presents the numbers :
There were altogether 8709 male veterans with an average age of 60 all with risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
1223 men were receiving testosterone therapy and 7486 men did not.
Now lets go to the results
Of 1223 men in testosterone group
67 had died - 5.4%
33 had stroke 2.7%
23 had heart attacks 1.9%
Of 7486 men not on testosterone
681 had died -9% almost twice as much than in testosterone group
486 had stroke - 6.5% - more than 2 times more than in testosterone group
420 had heart attack - 5.6% almost 3 times more than in testosterone group.
The author concludes that "The study found that testosterone use was associated with a 30% increase in risk of stroke, heart attack, and death."
I calculated and recalculated these percentages because I did not believe my eyes. But they were correct.
I do not know if this is printing error or blatant lie. But how many readers would go to all the length of calculating percentages instead of blindly believe those conclusions.

For men, low testosterone means high risk of severe COVID-19 | Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis 05/28/2021

I was writing a lot of many health benefits of optimal testosterone levels and Testosterone Replacement therapy. But this is new and I do not know how to react to this article.
On one hand it states that men with higher levels of testosterone predicts less severe disease. On the other hand lower and super low testosterone levels that correspond to severity of COVID disease may be caused by the disease itself.
The most possible explanation is that the more severe the presentation of COVID infection the more it affects testosterone production and release. This can be explained by severe stress requiring large amount of pregnenolone to be directed away from Testosterone pathway into synthesis of Cortizol, the stress hormone. Testosterone levels always drop when men are ill.
On the other hand higher testosterone levels in men are associated with better overall health status and therefore less severe disease.
As a physician involved in Testosterone Replacement Therapy I left this conclusion to be the final one.
Maybe higher level of testosterone do mitigate symptoms of COVID infection and therefore Testosterone Replacement Therapy can be proven beneficial in treatment and prevention of COVID infection.

Study: Low fat diets reduce men’s testosterone levels 05/21/2021

Low fat diet leads to 10-15 % reduction testosterone levels.
For more than 30 years I have advocated for low carbs instead of low fat diets. Recently (about 5 years ago) medical opinion on low fat diets started to change.
In my view carbohydrates are worthless foods that are not a part of the body composition (with exception of glycogen, the animal starch that is present in small amounts in the muscles and liver in case of emergencies). Carbs are only useful to be converted to energy. They can only be useful if taken minutes before workout when muscles are actively working. Otherwise they will be converted to fat if not burned immediately.
Fats on the other side is essential part of body composition and in non obese person usually constitute 20% of the body weight.
Most important function of fats in the body is waterproofing.
Fats are essential part of cell membranes which are made of cholesterol. Membranes make it possible to separate cell contents from outside fluid. Fats are what steroid hormones such as s*x hormones, defense hormones and other are made of. Fats are necessary for breathing because fatty substance in the lungs, namely surfactant keeps alveoli expanding preventing them from folding down. Fat functions as shock absorber for internal organs.
The other quality of fats is that they easily pe*****te through fatty cell membranes to be used for energy. By the way fats are twice as energy rich as carbs. Cells are necessary for healthy brain function because brain is essentially fatty tissue with 60% fat content.
Now this study is showing that testosterone drops 10-15% on low fat diet. Low testosterone levels are associated with metabolic syndrome and higher cardio-vascular morbidity.

Study: Low fat diets reduce men’s testosterone levels A new study conducted at the University of Worcester and published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, has found low fat diets decrease men’s testosterone levels by 10-15%.
