Psychologists can now practise across more than 40 US states on one credential. None of that portability crosses a border.
PSYPACT now covers more than 40 states and territories. The counseling compact is live in its first member states. Social work's is in early implementation. Inside the United States, licensure portability is genuinely arriving. Slowly, unevenly, but arriving.
Cross a national border and the number resets to zero. There is no international mutual recognition agreement for counseling, psychology, social work, or marriage and family therapy. Not one in progress. None.
I raise it because I know a lot of people in these professions, and tracking how these rules change is part of my work. It would be easy to read the compact news as portability solved. That is not what it says.
A compact is an agreement between US states. It stops where their authority stops.
That is not a reason to abandon the plan. It is a reason to build it on what is actually true, which usually means a country by country credential assessment, often additional supervised practice, sometimes re-examination, and a conversation with the regulator in the destination rather than a forum thread.
Virtual Impact is about doing that work with your eyes open. The opening pages are free: lwinnovations.com/preview
Sources in the first comment. Education, not legal advice. For your own situation, talk to a licensed professional in the destination country.
Your license may not travel. You still do.
A license proves you cleared one country's bar. The judgment
underneath it, the pattern recognition, the years of actually
doing the work, that travels whether or not the paperwork does.
32.6% of recent immigrants holding postsecondary credentials
say they are overqualified for their job. For people born in
the country it is 19.1%.
That is not a personal failure. That is a system that hasn't
caught up.

Your license may not transfer. The judgment underneath it does.
I've watched clients rebuild professional lives in a new country while holding degrees, licenses, and years of experience that simply don't count there. Not because the work wasn't real. Because the paperwork doesn't cross borders the way people do.
Canada has committed C$97 million over five years, starting in 2026–27, to a Foreign Credential Recognition Action Fund focused on the health and construction sectors.
It is aimed at a real gap. Statistics Canada found that 32.6% of recent immigrants with postsecondary credentials say they are overqualified for their job, against 19.1% of people born there.
That's not a personal failure. That's a system that hasn't caught up.
Here's the distinction I wish someone had handed me sooner: your credential is not your competence. A license proves you cleared one country's bar. The judgment, the pattern recognition, the years of actually doing the work — that travels with you whether or not the paperwork does.
Virtual Impact is written for the version of you that already knows this and is trying to work out what to do with it. The opening pages are free: lwinnovations.com/preview

Not a sample chapter picked to sell you something. The actual front of the book — title page, the full contents, About the Author, the Author's Note, and how the whole thing is organized.
The Author's Note has a line in it I sat with for a long time before I let it stay. Eventually, I had to confront an uncomfortable truth: I was willing to bet on almost everyone except myself.
That is where this book came from. Not from having it worked out.
You can see every chapter title before you spend anything. If the arc isn't for you, you'll know in nine pages, and I would rather you knew.
Digital, 1 September. Paperback to follow.

Here's what almost made the cover.
Cover design went through more versions than I'll admit to. The one that made it isn't the flashiest but it is the one that felt honest. That's been the standard for this whole book: does it feel true, not just polished. And if it does, then delete.
Does it provide value = keep
Does it sound good = sure, but is it helpful
This was my goal and my heart.
Cover reveal coming soon.

Working from anywhere isn't about location. It's about whether the work you already know how to do can travel with you. That's the whole book, honestly.
